The United States has issued a warning to Nigerian students studying in America, saying any student who skips classes or abandons their programme without informing their school may have their visa revoked.

This was disclosed by the US Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Richard Mills, during a visit to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, on Friday in Abuja.

Mills explained that a student visa is given strictly for academic purposes, and violating its terms could lead to deportation and a lifetime ban from entering the US.

“Don’t stay beyond the amount of time you were admitted. If you overstay, you could be deported and banned for life from travelling to the US,” Mills said.

He stressed the importance of being truthful during visa applications. “Be honest about the reason for your travel, how you will fund it, and what ties you have to return home to Nigeria,” he added.

The Ambassador further warned that holding a visa does not automatically guarantee entry into the US. “What matters is your understanding of your purpose of travel and your willingness to return,” he said.

On student visas, Mills noted that remaining active in the approved academic programme is a requirement. “If you skip classes or leave your course without proper notice, your visa can be cancelled,” he said.

He said the US government wants to ensure that only those who follow the rules benefit from the opportunity to study abroad.

In response, Minister Mohammed Idris said Nigeria values its strong relationship with the United States and will continue to partner with them for the benefit of both countries.

He said the Federal Government is committed to informing Nigerians about such important policies through the Ministry of Information.

“We will continue to work with our international partners, including the US, to help Nigerians understand new visa rules and what is expected of them,” Idris said.
