Kano residents were left shocked on Thursday, December 11, 2025, following a massive fire that gutted sections of the Rogo General Hospital in Rogo Local Government Area. The incident occurred in the early hours of the afternoon, raising serious concerns about safety measures in public health facilities across the state.
The Kano State Fire Service confirmed the outbreak in an official statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi. According to the release, the Emergency Response Unit, under the leadership of Director Alhaji Sani Anas, received a distress call at about 14:36 hours from Abdullahi Ahmad Rifan, who reported the blaze.
Firefighters from the Karaye and Rogo Fire Stations were immediately mobilised to the scene. Upon arrival, they were met with intense flames engulfing a one-storey hospital building measuring approximately 400 by 400 feet. Several critical sections of the hospital were affected, including the Physiotherapy Clinic, the Medical Emergency Unit (MEU) office, the Dental Unit, the Out-Patient Department, the ACC/Card room, the DOT Office, and the Laboratory Office. All these units are located on the ground floor of the building.
While no casualties were reported, the fire caused significant damage to hospital property, medical equipment, and patient records, threatening to disrupt healthcare services in the area. Preliminary investigations by the fire service suggest that the outbreak was triggered by an electrical spark, a common hazard during the dry and dusty harmattan season, which is known to increase the risk of fire incidents in homes and public buildings.
The Kano State Fire Service said further investigations would be conducted to determine the exact cause of the blaze and to recommend measures to prevent similar occurrences. ACFO Abdullahi noted, “Our preliminary findings indicate that the fire started due to an electrical fault. However, a thorough investigation will provide more details.
