A 36-year-old Lagos realtor, Yinka Agboola, has died after being allegedly run over by a yet-to-be-identified driver during a confrontation over a parking space at Royal Pine Estate, Orchid Road, Lekki.
The incident, which occurred on Monday evening, reportedly began as a minor disagreement between the driver and residents over improper parking within the estate. Witnesses said the driver became hostile when asked to move his vehicle to ease traffic congestion.
According to an X user, @Ifeoluwaar, who first raised the alarm about the incident on Thursday, residents offered the driver an alternative parking space after noticing that his vehicle was obstructing the road. Instead of cooperating, the driver allegedly threatened to kill one of the residents.
“The situation began when the individual involved was politely asked to move his vehicle from the middle of the road to allow free movement. Despite being offered an alternative parking spot, he replied to a resident, ‘Do you know who I am? I will kill you right now,’” the post read.
The dispute escalated, prompting Agboola, who was also a resident of the estate, to step in and help calm the situation. Witnesses said that rather than driving away peacefully, the driver entered his car, reversed aggressively, and accelerated toward the crowd.
Agboola reportedly attempted to restrain the vehicle, but the driver sped off with him clinging to the steering wheel, eventually throwing him violently onto a pavement and into a gutter. Residents rushed the injured man to an intensive care unit at an undisclosed hospital, while fundraising appeals for his treatment quickly circulated on social media.
Unfortunately, in a follow-up post on Wednesday, another social media user, @Omolomo, announced that Agboola had succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of the day.
CCTV footage shared online captured the white Mercedes-Benz reversing dangerously toward a crowd of residents and the moment Agboola was struck, intensifying public outrage over the incident.
The videos have fueled demands for the immediate arrest of the fleeing driver. Many residents have shared the vehicle’s number plate online, urging law enforcement agencies to act swiftly. The police have been formally notified, and Agboola’s sister, Oluwadamilola, confirmed that a report was filed at the Ajah Police Division.
“I went to the Ajah police station. The witnesses had already been there earlier, but I went yesterday to give my statement,” she said, adding that the suspect’s whereabouts remain unknown.
Social media users have expressed shock and anger, condemning the violent act and calling for justice for Agboola. Many have also raised concerns about road safety and the handling of disputes within residential estates.
Lekki, a fast-developing area in Lagos, has experienced growing traffic congestion due to rapid urban development and increasing vehicle density. Parking spaces within estates are often limited, which occasionally results in confrontations between residents and visitors.
While minor disputes are common, this incident underscores the risks when confrontations escalate and individuals resort to violence. Observers say it also highlights the urgent need for better estate management and traffic control measures to prevent similar tragedies.
The incident has sparked nationwide discussions about road safety and the responsibility of drivers in residential areas. Civic groups and social media users have called for stricter regulations to prevent reckless driving and protect residents in estates and communities.
Many commenters stressed the importance of conflict de-escalation and peaceful resolution of disputes, emphasizing that no disagreement over parking or traffic should end in violence or death.
The death of Yinka Agboola has become a rallying point for advocacy on safer driving practices, estate management reforms, and improved policing in Lagos State.
Friends, family members, and residents of Royal Pine Estate have expressed shock and grief over the loss of Agboola. Social media posts commemorating his life describe him as a helpful and community-minded individual who intervened to prevent further escalation of the parking dispute.
Oluwadamilola, Agboola’s sister, said the family is calling on the Lagos State Police to ensure that justice is served. “We want the driver to be arrested and prosecuted. This was a senseless and avoidable death,” she said.
