Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has called on residents of the state to remain calm, united, and focused despite rising political tension and uncertainty in the state.

The governor assured the people that his administration would not be distracted, intimidated, or forced off course by what he described as the “sounds of war” coming from political quarters. He stressed that his government remains committed to peace, dialogue, and responsible leadership rather than confrontation.

Governor Fubara gave this assurance during his New Year message at the crossover service held at the Chapel of Everlasting Grace, Government House, Port Harcourt, as Rivers State welcomed the year 2026.

Addressing a congregation made up of government officials, political leaders, and residents, the governor said his administration would continue to rely on prayer, patience, and peaceful engagement as its guiding principles in the new year.

According to him, these values, rather than threats or force, would shape governance and decision-making in Rivers State in 2026.

Governor Fubara reflected on the first two years of his administration, describing the period as difficult and turbulent. He said the state experienced internal political pressure that affected the pace of development and governance.

Despite these challenges, he noted that Rivers State remained standing and did not descend into crisis or instability. He attributed this resilience to divine intervention and the collective strength, patience, and support of the people.

“The past two years were not easy. There were pressures from different directions, and development slowed down,” the governor said. “But Rivers State did not collapse. We survived because God stood by us and because the people stood together.”

He expressed confidence that 2026 would mark a turning point for the state, bringing stability, clearer direction, and faster development across key sectors.

According to him, lessons learned from the past years would help his administration govern better and serve the people more effectively in the new year.

Governor Fubara urged residents to ignore political intimidation, distractions, and threats, warning that fear and division could weaken the state.

Using a biblical example, he referred to the experience of Prophet Elijah, who heard strong winds, earthquakes, and fire, but only encountered God through a “still small voice.” He encouraged the people to focus on faith, truth, and calm leadership rather than being unsettled by loud threats and provocations.

“We do not have the instrument of war; the only thing we have is our knees,” the governor said. “And we will continue to pray to God. Do not be troubled by the sounds of war you are hearing.”

He added that Rivers State was stepping into 2026 with hope, confidence, and assurance that those who trust in God would not be put to shame.

The governor’s message comes against the background of ongoing political tension in Rivers State, which has drawn national attention in recent months. The state, one of Nigeria’s key oil-producing regions, has often been a major political battleground due to its economic and strategic importance.

Governor Fubara reaffirmed his commitment to peace and political maturity, saying that Rivers State would not be dragged into chaos or violence because of political disagreements.

He stressed that any political alignment or support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections would be based on dialogue, understanding, and mutual respect, not coercion or intimidation.

“Politics should not be by force,” he said. “Whatever decisions we take as a state will be based on discussion and respect, not threats.”

This statement is seen as an effort to reassure residents and political stakeholders that his administration remains focused on stability and good governance, even as political activities ahead of 2027 gradually begin to take shape.

Governor Fubara praised the people of Rivers State and supporters of his administration for their loyalty, patience, and resilience during difficult times. He said their steadfast support helped his government remain focused and stable despite sustained pressure.

According to him, the unity shown by residents has been a major factor in preventing the escalation of political tension into open conflict.

“I thank the people of Rivers State for standing firm,” he said. “Your resilience has helped this government stay on course.”

He promised that his administration would continue to work in the interest of all residents, regardless of political differences, and would prioritise peace, development, and inclusive governance.

Earlier in the service, the Government House Chaplain, Pastor Ogan Barasin, delivered a sermon titled “At Thy Word.” He called on Christians and residents of Rivers State to practise total obedience to God in 2026.

Pastor Barasin warned that delayed obedience could lead to delayed testimonies, urging people to act in faith rather than making excuses in the new year.

Quoting from the Gospel of Luke, he said the new year would require faith-driven actions and trust in God’s word, especially in times of uncertainty.

He declared 2026 a year of visible and tangible miracles for those who trust and obey God. He also offered prayers and prophetic declarations for peace, progress, and lasting stability in Rivers State.

Rivers State remains one of Nigeria’s most important states due to its role in the oil and gas sector and its contribution to the national economy. Political stability in the state is often seen as crucial not only for local development but also for national economic interests.

Residents and civil society groups have repeatedly called for peace and dialogue, urging political leaders to put the welfare of the people above personal or political interests.

As the state enters 2026, many residents are hopeful that the governor’s message of calm and unity will help ease tension and allow the government to focus on development, infrastructure, job creation, and improved social services.
