President Bola Tinubu has described former President Olusegun Obasanjo as a “towering influence” whose impact will continue to be felt in Nigeria, across Africa and around the world.

Tinubu made this known in a message to mark Obasanjo’s 89th birthday. The congratulatory message was contained in a statement released on Wednesday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

In the statement, Tinubu expressed joy as the former leader marked another year, praising his long record of service to the country. He said Obasanjo remains one of Nigeria’s most respected elder statesmen and a strong voice on national and continental matters.

The President noted that Obasanjo’s influence goes beyond Nigeria, describing him as a leader whose ideas and actions have shaped discussions on governance, democracy and development in Africa.

Tinubu highlighted Obasanjo’s unique place in Nigeria’s history. According to him, the former president showed courage and commitment at different stages of the nation’s development.

Obasanjo first came to national prominence as a senior military officer. He served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1976 to 1979 after the assassination of General Murtala Mohammed. During that period, Nigeria was under military rule, as was common in many African countries at the time.

One of the most notable moments of his military leadership was the peaceful handover of power to a civilian government in 1979. That transition led to the emergence of President Shehu Shagari and marked the beginning of the Second Republic. Many observers have often praised Obasanjo for keeping his promise to return the country to civilian rule.

Tinubu recalled this important chapter, noting that Obasanjo handed over power voluntarily, setting an example at a time when military rulers in Africa were often reluctant to leave office.

Years later, Obasanjo returned to power, this time as a civilian. Following the end of military rule in 1999, he was elected as Nigeria’s president at the start of the Fourth Republic. He served two terms from 1999 to 2007.

His civilian presidency came after Nigeria experienced years of political instability and military governments. The return to democracy in 1999 was widely seen as a fresh start for the country. As president, Obasanjo focused on rebuilding Nigeria’s international image, reforming key sectors and working on debt relief.

During his time in office, Nigeria secured a major debt relief deal with the Paris Club, which reduced the country’s external debt burden. His administration also introduced reforms in banking, telecommunications and anti-corruption efforts. These steps helped to stabilise parts of the economy and attract foreign investment.

Tinubu, in his birthday message, said Obasanjo’s leadership during both military and civilian periods showed dedication to national unity and progress.

The President also mentioned Obasanjo’s role during Nigeria’s civil war between 1967 and 1970. As a military officer, Obasanjo commanded troops and played a part in efforts to keep the country united. The civil war remains one of the most painful chapters in Nigeria’s history, and those who fought in it are often remembered for their role in preserving the nation.

Beyond his time in office, Obasanjo has remained active in public life. He has written books, delivered lectures and regularly commented on national issues. He is known for speaking his mind, even when his views are controversial.

Tinubu noted that the former leader once spent time in prison for speaking out against unfair rule. In the 1990s, during the regime of General Sani Abacha, Obasanjo was jailed over allegations linked to an alleged coup plot. Many local and international observers saw his imprisonment as politically motivated. He was later released following Abacha’s death in 1998.

President Tinubu also praised Obasanjo’s contributions beyond Nigeria. Over the years, the former president has played important roles in African diplomacy. He has served as a mediator in conflicts across the continent and worked with regional and international bodies on peace and development efforts.

Obasanjo has been involved in initiatives of the African Union and other global organisations. He has also championed issues such as good governance, agricultural development and economic cooperation in Africa.

Tinubu said the former president has consistently shown passion and deep knowledge in matters concerning Nigeria and the continent. He described Obasanjo’s writings and continued engagement in public discussions as proof of his strong love for the country.

Even after leaving office in 2007, Obasanjo has remained influential. Political leaders, both in government and opposition, often seek his counsel. Though he has sometimes criticised sitting governments, including those that came after his tenure, many Nigerians still regard him as a key figure in the nation’s political history.

At 89, Obasanjo stands as one of the few living leaders who have served both as a military head of state and as a civilian president. This rare experience gives him a unique perspective on governance and leadership.

In his message, Tinubu prayed for many more years of good health, strength and wisdom for the elder statesman. He said Nigeria and the wider world would continue to benefit from Obasanjo’s experience and guidance.

The President’s tribute comes at a time when Nigeria is facing economic and security challenges. Many citizens look to past and present leaders for solutions and direction. By celebrating Obasanjo’s legacy, Tinubu acknowledged the importance of experience and continuity in national development.

As family members, friends and associates celebrate the former president’s 89th birthday, many Nigerians are reflecting on his long years of service. From the battlefield to the presidential villa, from prison to global diplomatic missions, Obasanjo’s journey has been eventful.

With Tinubu’s message, the Federal Government has once again recognised Obasanjo’s place in history — as a soldier, a statesman and a continuing voice in the affairs of the nation.
