In a large-scale gesture to mark the 74th birthday of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Sunday distributed 20,000 food packs to residents across the state. The initiative was aimed at celebrating the President while also supporting citizens amid ongoing economic reforms.

The distribution, which was coordinated across the 20 Local Government Areas (LGs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) of Lagos, took place at multiple locations, including the De Blue Roof Event Centre, religious centres, and community halls. Government officials, community leaders, and representatives from various civic groups were present to oversee the event.

According to Gboyega Akosile, who issued a statement on Sunday, the food packs were accompanied by a personalised open letter from Governor Sanwo-Olu, encouraging residents to celebrate Tinubu and continue supporting his administration’s policies.

In the letter, the Governor described Tinubu as an “extraordinary leader” and praised his vision for Nigeria. “My dear people, as you receive this gift box, know that its contents are more than a token of celebration. Therein is the united voice of Lagos State, saying resoundingly, ‘We stand with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. We stand with his Renewed Hope Agenda. We believe in the Nigeria he is building. Yes, we believe!’” the letter read.

Sanwo-Olu acknowledged that residents had endured challenging times due to the nation’s ongoing economic reforms but highlighted the positive impact these policies were beginning to yield. “We have endured the pains of the reforms together, and now we are beginning to reap the rewards of our endurance. The worst is behind us, and the best is in sight,” the Governor said.

He also called on Lagos residents to sustain their support for the President’s administration, noting that the transformation initiated under Tinubu’s leadership must not be abandoned midway. “The seeds planted with such courage, boldness and foresight are only just beginning to bear fruits,” he added.

A significant part of Sanwo-Olu’s message centred on Tinubu’s legacy as a former Lagos State Governor. Serving from 1999 to 2007, Tinubu is widely credited with transforming Lagos into a major economic hub. Sanwo-Olu stated that the initiatives and revenue structures established during Tinubu’s tenure laid the foundation for the state’s current growth trajectory.

“As your Governor, I have had the privilege of building upon the legacy President Tinubu created as Governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007. His visionary leadership transformed Lagos into the economic powerhouse it is today,” Sanwo-Olu said. He further emphasised that the revenue systems, institutions, and culture of excellence nurtured by Tinubu continue to shape Lagos’ development, forming the pillars of the state’s “Greater Lagos Rising Agenda.”

Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, described the food distribution as a symbolic and inclusive initiative. “It is a special day for Nigeria, a special day for the Black race and a special day for us in Lagos because today is the birthday of our President,” he said. Omotoso explained that the goal was to allow all Lagos residents to participate in the celebration and feel included in the occasion.

Also addressing attendees, the Special Adviser on Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement, Tajudeen Afolabi, stated that the initiative reflected the administration’s commitment to the welfare of residents. “This is the gift of Renewed Hope for Lagosians and residents of Lagos State,” he said, underlining the connection between the celebration and the government’s ongoing development policies.

The gesture of distributing 20,000 food packs was met with appreciation from residents. Many described the initiative as timely, particularly as Nigerians continue to face economic challenges including rising food prices, inflation, and cost of living pressures. Beneficiaries praised the state government for providing relief while reinforcing the importance of continued support for national policies.

The distribution also reinforced Tinubu’s image as a leader with a track record in Lagos. His tenure as governor was marked by large-scale urban projects, infrastructural development, and reforms in revenue collection. These efforts helped Lagos grow into one of Africa’s most dynamic economic centres, attracting both local and international investment.

In addition to material support, the celebration aimed to strengthen civic engagement and political awareness among residents. By reading out the open letter during the ceremony, Sanwo-Olu sought to communicate both a message of unity and an appeal for continued citizen participation in governance.

“This initiative goes beyond gifts; it is a call for Lagosians to remain committed to the nation’s progress,” the Governor said. Analysts suggest that this approach reflects a broader political strategy to maintain popular support while demonstrating the practical impact of government programmes.

Across the 20 LGs and 37 LCDAs, volunteers ensured that the distribution reached residents in both urban and rural communities. Religious centres, community halls, and open spaces were used as distribution points to maximise reach. Many residents expressed gratitude, emphasizing that the food packs provided relief amid ongoing economic pressures.
