The Kwara State Police Command has announced a statewide security operation ahead of the Easter celebrations, deploying officers to churches, highways, and other public spaces to ensure a peaceful and safe festive period.
The move, according to the police, is part of proactive efforts to protect lives and property as Christians across Nigeria prepare to mark Easter, one of the most important events in the Christian calendar.
In a statement issued in Ilorin, the Police Public Relations Officer, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, said officers have been strategically deployed to locations expected to witness large gatherings.
These include churches, event centres, major roads, recreational centres, and other public places where residents are likely to gather during the celebrations.
“Personnel have been strategically positioned at churches, event centres, highways, recreational locations, and other public spaces,” the statement said.
The police added that patrol teams and tactical units have also been mobilised to ensure rapid response to any security threats that may arise.
According to the Command, the security arrangement covers all parts of Kwara State, with special focus on areas that traditionally record high turnout during festive periods.
Easter is usually marked by church services, family visits, social gatherings, and travel, leading to increased movement of people across the state.
This often requires heightened security presence to manage crowds, prevent crime, and respond quickly to emergencies.
The police said the deployment is aimed at maintaining law and order before, during, and after the celebrations.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Adekimi Ojo, assured residents that adequate measures have been put in place to guarantee their safety.
“We have put in place adequate security measures across the state. Our officers have been deployed to critical points, and we will not relent in ensuring that lives and property are protected throughout the festive period,” he said.
He also directed Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and heads of tactical units to intensify visibility policing in their respective areas.
Visibility policing involves officers being physically present and visible in public spaces to deter criminal activity and reassure citizens.
The police commissioner stressed the importance of intelligence-led operations, noting that officers have been instructed to remain on high alert throughout the period.
“We expect all officers to carry out their duties diligently and ensure that no breach of peace is recorded before, during, or after the celebrations,” he added.
He also highlighted the role of community cooperation in achieving effective security.
According to him, the Command is working closely with religious leaders and other stakeholders to ensure smooth coordination and adequate protection for worshippers.
Easter is a major religious event celebrated by millions of Christians in Nigeria and around the world. It marks the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and is often observed with church services, prayers, and community gatherings.
In states like Kwara, which have a mix of religious communities, the celebration attracts large crowds, making security planning essential.
Over the years, security agencies across Nigeria have increased vigilance during festive periods due to concerns about crime, accidents, and, in some cases, threats from armed groups.
The police have also called on residents to play their part in maintaining peace and security during the celebrations.
They urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities or individuals to the nearest police station.
Residents were also provided with emergency contact numbers to reach the Command’s control room in case of any incidents.
Parents and guardians were advised to keep close watch over their children, especially in crowded places, to prevent cases of missing persons or accidents.
The Commissioner of Police also reminded officers to conduct themselves in a professional manner while carrying out their duties.
He stressed the importance of respecting the rights of citizens and maintaining civility in all interactions with the public.
This directive comes amid ongoing efforts by the Nigeria Police Force to build public trust and improve relations with communities.
Security during festive periods has become a major concern in many parts of Nigeria, as large gatherings can sometimes attract criminal activities such as theft, traffic robbery, and disorderly conduct.
In recent years, authorities have also had to contend with broader security challenges in different parts of the country, making proactive planning even more important.
Although Kwara State is generally considered relatively peaceful compared to some other regions, security agencies continue to take preventive steps to avoid any incidents.
The Kwara State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a safe environment for all residents during the Easter period.
The Command also extended goodwill messages to Christian faithful, wishing them a peaceful and joyful celebration.
As preparations for Easter continue, residents are expected to go about their activities with increased confidence, knowing that security agencies are on alert.
At the same time, authorities have highlighted that safety is a shared responsibility, calling on everyone to remain security-conscious and cooperate with law enforcement officers.
