The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced that it will release the first batch of results for the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) before midnight on Friday.

The update is expected to bring relief and anxiety to thousands of candidates who sat for the examination on its opening day, Thursday, April 16, 2026.

The announcement was made in a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) by JAMB’s spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin.

According to the statement, candidates who participated in the first day of the nationwide examination will be able to check their results later in the day.

JAMB also assured candidates that an official announcement would be made once the results are fully processed and uploaded to its system.

The planned midnight release continues JAMB’s recent approach of releasing UTME results shortly after the examination days. In previous years, the examination body has reduced the waiting time for candidates, moving away from delays that once lasted several weeks.

Education stakeholders say this quicker release system has improved transparency and reduced tension among candidates and their families.

The 2026 UTME began on April 16 across various computer-based test (CBT) centres nationwide. Thousands of candidates are expected to participate in the examination over several days.

The UTME is a key requirement for admission into universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education in Nigeria. Every year, over a million candidates sit for the exam, making it one of the largest public examinations in the country.

As news of the result release spread, many candidates expressed mixed feelings. While some are eager to check their performance, others are anxious about their scores and what it could mean for their admission chances.

For many students, the UTME represents months of preparation and hope for securing a place in their preferred institutions.

“I just want to see my result and know where I stand,” said one candidate in Lagos. “It has not been easy preparing for this exam.”

Parents have also been closely following developments, as admission into higher institutions remains highly competitive in Nigeria.

UTME scores play a major role in determining admission into tertiary institutions. However, they are not the only requirement.

In recent years, many institutions have combined UTME scores with post-UTME screening results and other criteria to select candidates.

Cut-off marks also vary depending on the institution and course of study. Competitive courses such as medicine, law, and engineering often require higher scores.

JAMB usually sets a general minimum cut-off mark, but individual institutions have the authority to decide their final admission benchmarks.

While JAMB has improved its operations over the years, concerns about technical issues, examination malpractice, and candidate welfare still come up during each UTME cycle.

The board has repeatedly assured the public of its commitment to fairness and transparency. It has also introduced measures such as biometric verification and computer-based testing to reduce cheating.

After checking their results, candidates will need to wait for further updates from JAMB and their chosen institutions.

The next stages in the admission process typically include the release of cut-off marks, post-UTME screenings, and the use of JAMB’s Central Admission Processing System (CAPS).

Candidates are advised to regularly check official JAMB platforms for updates and avoid relying on unverified sources.

As the 2026 UTME continues, more batches of results are expected to be released in the coming days.

For now, attention is focused on the first group of candidates, whose results will set the tone for the rest of the examination period.

With the pressure of performance and limited admission spaces, the UTME remains a defining moment for many young Nigerians seeking higher education.
