The race for the 2027 governorship election in Bauchi State has gained momentum as the immediate past Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, officially declared his intention to contest for the top job.

Tuggar, who stepped down from his ministerial position in March 2026, said his decision followed a directive by President Bola Tinubu, which required political appointees seeking elective offices to resign before pursuing their ambitions. His resignation has cleared the way for him to fully focus on his campaign.

Speaking on Saturday during a visit to the All Progressives Congress (APC) office in Bauchi, Tuggar said it was important to first consult with the party before making his formal declaration to the public. According to him, the party remains the foundation of any political ambition.

“I approached the party office before moving to the declaration ground because the party is the first point of call,” he said. “As directed by the President, I resigned my position on March 31.”

The former minister used the occasion to call for unity among APC members in Bauchi State, stressing that internal divisions could weaken the party’s chances in the election. He urged party leaders and supporters to work together to reclaim power in the state.

Tuggar also made a strong commitment to party discipline, saying he would support whoever emerges as the APC candidate if he does not win the party’s ticket. He promised not to take legal action against fellow party members over the outcome of the primaries.

“My political philosophy is that whoever emerges as the party’s flag bearer, I will not take my fellow party member to court. I will support and wish the person well,” he said.

His statement appears to be aimed at reducing tensions often associated with party primaries in Nigeria, where disputes frequently lead to court cases and internal crises.

At the main declaration event later in the day, Tuggar addressed supporters and outlined his vision for Bauchi State. He said his decision to run was driven by a desire to serve the people and address the many challenges facing the state.

According to him, Bauchi continues to struggle with high levels of poverty, unemployment, insecurity, and limited access to quality education and healthcare services. He said these issues require urgent attention and practical solutions.

“This is not just my ambition; it is a collective mission to move Bauchi State forward,” Tuggar told the crowd.

He promised to build on the achievements of past leaders while also tackling existing gaps in governance and development. He noted that progress in the state must be sustained, but new ideas are also needed to meet current realities.

On the economy, Tuggar said his administration would focus on agriculture as a major driver of growth. He explained that Bauchi has vast agricultural potential that has not been fully developed. By investing in farming, improving access to markets, and supporting farmers with modern tools, he believes the state can create jobs and boost income.

He also pledged strong support for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), which he described as key to economic development. According to him, providing access to funding, training, and infrastructure would help local businesses grow and create more opportunities for young people.

In addition, Tuggar highlighted the importance of developing the solid minerals sector, noting that Bauchi is rich in natural resources that can contribute to the state’s revenue if properly managed.

On workers’ welfare, the former minister promised prompt payment of salaries and better working conditions for civil servants. He said a motivated workforce is essential for effective governance and service delivery.

He also spoke about the need to improve infrastructure, especially in rural areas. According to him, better roads, markets, and basic facilities would help connect communities and support economic activities.

Security was another major focus of his speech. Tuggar acknowledged the growing concerns about safety in parts of the state and promised to take decisive action if elected.

“We will ensure that no farmer fears going to the farm, no trader fears the road, and no child fears going to school,” he said.

He outlined plans to strengthen collaboration between local communities and security agencies. He also said his administration would invest in intelligence gathering to prevent crime and respond quickly to threats.

Tuggar added that addressing the root causes of insecurity would be a priority. He identified youth unemployment and drug abuse as major factors contributing to crime and promised to tackle them through job creation and social programmes.

In the education sector, Tuggar said he would focus on reducing the number of out-of-school children, a major issue in northern Nigeria. He promised to invest in teachers, improve school facilities, and expand vocational training to equip young people with practical skills.

He also spoke about the importance of digital innovation, saying that youths in Bauchi should not be left behind in the modern economy. By promoting technology and digital skills, he believes the state can open new opportunities for its young population.

On healthcare, Tuggar pledged to provide accessible and affordable primary healthcare services. He said special attention would be given to vulnerable groups, including women, children, and the elderly.

He also promised to introduce social protection programmes to support those in need, especially in rural communities.

Tuggar further outlined plans for transparency and accountability in government. He said his administration would carry out civil service reforms to improve efficiency and reduce waste.

He also promised inclusive governance, with efforts to ensure that women and minority communities are given a voice in decision-making.

Bauchi State has been a key battleground in recent elections, with power shifting between major political parties over the years. The outcome of the 2027 governorship election is likely to have a significant impact on the state’s political direction.

As the campaign season begins to take shape, observers say the focus will be on how candidates address the everyday concerns of the people, including jobs, security, education, and healthcare.

For Tuggar, the journey has just begun. His ability to secure the APC ticket and unite party members will be crucial steps in his quest to become the next governor of Bauchi State.

With more aspirants expected to declare in the coming months, the political landscape in the state is set for an intense and closely watched contest.
