Human rights organisation Amnesty International has condemned the killing of five people by suspected political thugs in Kano State, describing the incident as part of a growing wave of violence linked to political activities in the state.
The attack, which occurred on Tuesday in Kano, has sparked outrage and renewed concerns over the safety of residents as political tensions continue to rise. In a statement issued on Wednesday, Amnesty International said the killings represent one of the most serious cases in what it called an alarming increase in political violence in recent times.
According to the organisation, it is currently investigating allegations that some prominent politicians and government officials in the state may be linked to the sponsorship of armed groups believed to be responsible for the attack.
Amnesty said it reviewed several video clips related to the incident, which showed disturbing scenes of violence. In the footage, a group of armed men was seen moving in large numbers, chasing victims who were trying to escape. The victims were later caught, beaten, and killed in public.
The organisation said additional videos showed victims lying helplessly on the ground, some in pools of blood, struggling before eventually dying from their injuries.
“In other videos, victims were shown in the pool of their own blood, turning helplessly to their last breath,” the statement said. “The armed thugs were wearing T-shirts associated with the ruling party and chanting songs of violence.”
These claims have not yet been officially confirmed by authorities, but they have added to growing fears among residents and observers about the role of political actors in the rising violence.
Amnesty International also revealed that it has received multiple reports alleging that supporters of some politicians in Kano have been attacking political opponents. According to the group, these attacks are not always based on clear political rivalry, as even perceived opponents have reportedly been targeted.
“Amnesty International has received reports of supporters of some politicians violently targeting political opponents, real or perceived,” the statement added.
The organisation said it is now looking into the names of individuals allegedly involved in sponsoring these groups, including some well-known figures in the state’s political space.
While the investigation is still ongoing, Amnesty warned that the situation points to a dangerous trend that could undermine peace and stability in Kano if not urgently addressed.
“This incident reflects a dangerous escalation of a deadly cycle of political violence consistently happening across Kano in recent months,” the organisation said.
Political violence has long been a concern in parts of Nigeria, especially during election periods. In many cases, politicians are accused of using thugs to intimidate opponents, disrupt rallies, and influence outcomes. However, rights groups say the situation in Kano appears to be worsening, with attacks becoming more frequent and more deadly.
Amnesty International warned that the activities of armed groups allegedly linked to politicians are becoming a serious threat to the right to life and safety of residents.
“The armed thugs reported to be working for some prominent politicians are increasingly posing a threat to the right to life, behaving as if they have the freedom to kill and destroy without consequences,” the organisation stated.
The rights group called on the Federal Government, security agencies, political leaders, and political parties to take immediate steps to address the situation and prevent further loss of life.
It stressed the need for all parties involved in political activities to respect the rule of law and ensure that citizens are protected at all times.
“The Nigerian authorities, law enforcement agencies, politicians, and political parties must respect the rule of law and ensure that lives and property are not put at risk,” Amnesty said.
The organisation also highlighted the importance of protecting fundamental rights, including the right to freedom of movement and association, especially during political events.
Residents of Kano have expressed concern over the rising violence, with many calling for stronger security measures and accountability for those responsible.
Some community leaders have warned that continued attacks could create fear among voters and discourage people from participating in political activities, which is essential for a healthy democracy.
Amnesty International echoed these concerns, noting that the increasing violence is already creating a climate of fear in the state.
“Increasing political violence by armed thugs is creating a toxic climate of fear and infringes on the rights of people to freely participate in politics,” the organisation said.
Security agencies have yet to issue a detailed statement on the incident as of the time of filing this report. It is also unclear whether any arrests have been made in connection with the killings.
They argue that a clear and firm response from authorities is necessary to restore public confidence and deter future attacks.
The incident has once again highlighted the need for political reforms and stricter enforcement of laws against violence in Nigeria’s democratic process.
As investigations continue, many Nigerians are watching closely to see whether those responsible for the Kano killings will be identified and brought to justice.
For now, the tragic events serve as a reminder of the dangers posed by unchecked political violence and the urgent need for all stakeholders to work together to ensure peace and security.
