The Osun State Government has warned residents across the state to prepare for possible flooding, heavy rainfall, windstorms, and other environmental hazards as the rainy season intensifies.

The government said recent weather forecasts and environmental observations showed that many communities in the state could experience intense rainfall capable of causing flash floods, erosion, destruction of property, and disruptions to daily activities.

The warning was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the Director-General and Special Envoy to the Governor on Climate Change and Renewable Energy, Chinwe Obuaku.

According to the statement, the expected weather conditions could also lead to injuries and loss of lives if residents fail to follow safety guidelines during the rainy season.

The government advised residents living in flood-prone communities, riverbank areas, low-lying environments, and places with poor drainage systems to remain alert and take precautionary measures.

“Recent meteorological forecasts and environmental observations showed that several communities in the state could experience intense rainfall capable of causing flooding, erosion, destruction of property, and traffic disruptions,” the statement said.

Authorities directed residents to immediately clear blocked drainage channels, waterways, gutters, and surrounding areas around homes, markets, offices, and business premises to allow the free flow of water.

The government also warned against indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drainage systems, canals, and waterways, noting that such practices contribute heavily to flooding and environmental disasters.

Residents were advised to avoid unnecessary movement during periods of heavy rainfall and stay away from flooded roads, bridges, and fast-flowing water to prevent accidents and possible deaths.

The statement further urged residents to secure weak structures, rooftops, electric poles, signboards, and trees that could be damaged or blown down by strong winds and thunderstorms.

Parents and guardians were also advised to closely monitor children during periods of heavy rainfall and severe weather conditions.

According to the government, emergency response agencies and relevant authorities have already been placed on alert to strengthen monitoring and respond quickly to emergencies linked to flooding and storms.

“Residents should promptly report incidents of flooding, erosion, drainage blockage, and fallen trees to relevant government authorities for immediate intervention and response,” the statement added.

The warning comes as many parts of Nigeria continue to experience increased rainfall following the peak of the rainy season.

In recent years, flooding has become one of the major environmental challenges affecting several states across the country, especially during periods of prolonged rainfall.

Communities in different parts of Nigeria have repeatedly suffered destruction of homes, roads, farmlands, schools, bridges, and public infrastructure due to severe flooding.

Osun State has also experienced cases of flood disasters in previous years, particularly in communities located close to rivers and poorly drained urban areas.

During heavy rainfall, many roads in towns and cities become flooded, causing traffic gridlock and affecting commercial activities.

In many urban centres, the rapid construction of buildings without proper drainage planning has worsened the flooding situation.

Authorities have repeatedly warned residents against building structures on waterways and drainage paths, saying such activities increase environmental risks during heavy rainfall.

The Osun State Government said personal responsibility and preventive actions remain critical in reducing avoidable disasters during the rainy season.

The state government’s warning is similar to advisories already issued by environmental and emergency management agencies in other states across the country.

In recent months, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency and the National Emergency Management Agency have issued several alerts predicting above-normal rainfall and possible flooding in parts of the country.

The agencies urged state governments and residents to begin early preparations to reduce the impact of potential disasters.

Flooding has remained a serious concern in Nigeria because of its impact on agriculture, transportation, public health, and the economy.

Heavy floods in previous years displaced thousands of residents in different states and destroyed crops, worsening food supply challenges in affected communities.

In many communities, residents have continued to appeal to governments at all levels to improve drainage systems and strengthen environmental sanitation programs.

Community leaders and environmental groups in Osun State have also repeatedly called for stricter enforcement of environmental laws and better urban planning to reduce flooding risks.

The government’s latest advisory is expected to increase public attention on environmental safety and disaster preparedness across the state.

Residents in areas prone to flooding are likely to begin clearing drainage systems and taking preventive steps ahead of heavier rainfall expected in the coming weeks.

Motorists and commercial transport operators have also been advised to exercise caution during storms and avoid driving through flooded roads.

In rural communities, farmers are expected to monitor weather conditions closely to protect crops and farmlands from erosion and flood damage.

The Osun State Government stressed that protecting lives and property during the rainy season requires cooperation between authorities and residents.

Officials say emergency agencies remain prepared to respond where necessary, but warned that prevention remains the most effective way to reduce the impact of flooding and environmental disasters.

For many residents across the state, the warning serves as another reminder of the growing environmental challenges linked to climate change and poor waste disposal practices.
