Masked Assailants Gun Down Politician in Rivers

Tension has gripped Ebubu community in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State following the killing of politician and grassroots mobiliser, Samuel Obe Ngobe, by unidentified gunmen at a hotel in the area.

The attack, which residents described as shocking and carefully planned, occurred when two masked men reportedly stormed the hotel and opened fire on the politician at close range before fleeing the scene.

Witnesses said the assailants walked calmly into the premises and headed straight toward the victim, suggesting that the operation may have been targeted.

According to residents, the sound of gunshots immediately threw the area into confusion as hotel workers, customers and other guests ran for safety.

Some eyewitnesses said the attackers did not exchange words with the victim before shooting him several times.

“The gunmen came in like they knew exactly who they were looking for,” a resident said. “Immediately the shots were fired, everybody started running in different directions.”

The attackers reportedly escaped moments after carrying out the operation, leaving the politician lying in a pool of blood.

Bystanders and residents were said to have rushed to the scene after the gunmen fled, but the victim was reportedly already dead from the gunshot wounds.

The killing quickly spread across Ebubu and nearby communities, creating fear and anxiety among residents who said the manner of the attack has raised fresh concerns over security in the area.

Ngobe was said to be well known within political and youth mobilisation circles in Eleme and surrounding communities. Residents described him as an active grassroots figure who participated in local political activities and community engagement.

Although authorities have yet to reveal the motive behind the killing, many residents believe the attack may not be unconnected with growing concerns over political violence and insecurity in parts of Rivers State.

Security operatives later arrived at the hotel to cordon off the area and begin preliminary investigations into the incident.

Police authorities were said to have taken statements from witnesses and hotel staff as part of efforts to track down the attackers and uncover those behind the operation.

As of the time of filing this report, no arrests had been announced.

The incident has further heightened fear among residents of Eleme Local Government Area, where some locals say insecurity has become a major concern in recent months.
