The Lagos State Government has shut down the Oshodi Resettlement Market following an alleged attack on officials of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), popularly known as KAI, during an enforcement operation in the area.
The closure was announced by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, who said the decision was taken after traders at the market allegedly obstructed government officials carrying out their duties and attacked members of the enforcement team.
The incident reportedly occurred on Monday during a routine operation in Oshodi, one of Lagos State’s busiest commercial and transportation centres.
Wahab disclosed the development in a statement posted on his official X account, stating that the market would remain closed while investigations and other enforcement actions continue.
According to the commissioner, officers of LAGESC were conducting an operation aimed at removing suspected hoodlums and beggars from the area when they encountered resistance.
He alleged that traders in the market prevented the officials from carrying out arrests and later attacked members of the enforcement team.
“The traders attacked officers and personnel of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps and prevented them from arresting hoodlums and beggars who vandalised the agency’s operational vehicles,” Wahab stated.
The commissioner also alleged that operational vehicles belonging to the agency were damaged during the incident.
Although no casualty was reported, the government described the attack as a serious violation of the law and an obstruction of official duties.
Authorities have not yet announced how long the market will remain closed, but officials said further investigations are ongoing and additional measures may be taken based on the outcome of the inquiry.
The closure is expected to affect hundreds of traders and customers who depend on the market for their daily business activities.
