Fresh attacks by armed bandits have claimed the lives of the Chief Imam of Talluje village and two other residents in Bodinga Local Government Area of Sokoto State, deepening fears over the worsening security situation in parts of the state.

The latest attack, which occurred in Danchadi District, reportedly lasted for nearly two hours as heavily armed assailants stormed two neighbouring communities, shooting indiscriminately before escaping with an unspecified number of rustled livestock.

Residents said the attacks began at about 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday and continued until around 6:00 p.m., leaving several families devastated.

A community leader in Danchadi, who spoke on the incident, said the attackers carried out coordinated assaults on the two communities at the same time, making it difficult for residents to defend themselves or seek help.

The killing of the Chief Imam has sent shockwaves across the area, where religious and traditional leaders have increasingly become targets of attacks by criminal groups.

With the latest incident, the number of chief Imams killed in communities within the area has risen to three in just a few weeks. The repeated attacks have raised fresh concerns among residents over the safety of community leaders and the growing boldness of armed bandits operating in the region.

Witnesses said the attackers fired repeatedly into the communities, forcing residents to flee into nearby bushes to escape the violence. Many families reportedly abandoned their homes as the gunmen moved through the villages.

Apart from the loss of lives, the attackers also made away with an unspecified number of cattle and other livestock, dealing another economic blow to residents whose livelihoods depend largely on farming and animal rearing.

Livestock rustling has remained one of the major crimes linked to bandit groups operating across northwestern Nigeria. Stolen animals are often sold in illegal markets, providing funding for further criminal activities.

Although the identities of the two other victims had yet to be confirmed as of the time of reporting, community members described the attack as one of the deadliest witnessed in recent weeks.

Residents said the prolonged nature of the attack also raised questions about the ability of security forces to respond quickly to distress calls in rural communities.

Bodinga Local Government Area has experienced repeated security challenges in recent years despite efforts by security agencies and the Sokoto State Government to curb attacks by bandits.

Many rural communities in Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi and parts of Katsina have continued to suffer attacks involving killings, kidnappings, cattle rustling and destruction of property.

The activities of armed groups have forced many farmers to abandon their farmlands, worsening food production and increasing economic hardship in affected communities.

In Sokoto State, several local government areas have remained vulnerable to attacks because of their proximity to forests and remote settlements that provide hiding places for criminal gangs.

The killing of religious leaders has become particularly troubling because they often play important roles in promoting peace, resolving disputes and providing guidance to their communities. Their deaths not only leave families grieving but also create leadership gaps within affected villages.

Residents of Danchadi District said fear has spread across neighbouring communities following the latest attack, with many people worried that the bandits could return.

Some community members have appealed to the Federal Government and the Sokoto State Government to strengthen security presence in vulnerable villages and improve surveillance to prevent further attacks.

They also called for more patrols by security agencies, especially in rural areas where residents say bandits often operate freely for long periods before security personnel arrive.

Northwest Nigeria has witnessed years of violent attacks by armed groups, with thousands of people killed and many others displaced from their homes. While military operations have recorded some successes against criminal gangs, attacks continue to occur in several communities across the region.

Authorities have also encouraged residents to share intelligence with security agencies to help track the movement of criminal groups. However, many rural dwellers say they remain exposed because of inadequate security coverage and the difficult terrain in many villages.

As families prepare to bury the victims of the latest attack, the people of Talluje and neighbouring communities are once again left mourning loved ones while hoping for lasting measures to restore peace and security to the area.
