Nigeria’s Ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, and veteran entertainer and social activist, Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, have congratulated the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, on his 65th birthday.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, turned 65 on Sunday, attracting goodwill messages from political associates, supporters, admirers and prominent Nigerians who praised his contributions to Nigeria’s democracy and public life.
Among the messages that drew attention was that of Omokri, a former presidential aide who has frequently criticised Obi on social media. Despite their political differences, Omokri set aside disagreements to celebrate the former presidential candidate, praying for his long life, good health and greater wisdom.
In a birthday message posted on his X account, Omokri said he and his family joined millions of Nigerians in celebrating Obi on the occasion of his birthday.
“Here is wishing Mr Peter Obi a happy birthday on his 65th birthday, today, Sunday, July 19, 2026. May God bless you with long life in good health.
“My family and I celebrate with you even as we thank God for His blessings bestowed on you. We rejoice with you when you rejoice, and recognise your contributions towards enlivening participatory democracy,” he wrote.
Omokri also acknowledged Obi’s impact on political participation in Nigeria, saying the former governor had encouraged many of his supporters to become more interested in democratic governance.
Quoting the Bible, he described Obi as someone who had inspired others to become more active citizens.
“Scripture says, ‘Iron sharpens iron,’ and you embody that. By being active in the political process, you have helped sharpen your followers, making them more conscious and engaged in the democratic life of Nigeria. For that, you have my admiration,” he stated.
The ambassador-designate ended his message by wishing Obi many more years of fulfilment and happiness.
“With malice toward none, with charity for all, I say once again, happy birthday, sir, and may this day put you in a good way, such that you say at the end of the day that you had a hey day!” he added.
Omokri’s message attracted attention because he has often disagreed publicly with Obi and his supporters over national issues and politics. His birthday wishes were therefore seen by many observers as a demonstration that political rivalry does not have to prevent mutual respect and civility.
Also celebrating Obi’s birthday, Charly Boy described the former Anambra governor as a courageous leader who has continued to inspire hope among millions of Nigerians despite criticism from political opponents.
In a series of posts on his X page, the outspoken entertainer praised Obi’s resilience and commitment to speaking out on national issues.
“As you add another year, may your strength increase.
“May your courage multiply. And may your love for this country survive all the attacks, insults, and distractions. For dey are simply scavengers.
“Nigeria still needs voices wey no dey fear to tell power the truth.
“Happy Birthday, my brother,” he wrote.
Charly Boy also commended Obi for giving many young Nigerians hope that positive change is still possible in the country.
According to him, Obi has remained a source of inspiration at a time when many Nigerians have become disappointed with political leadership.
“In a country where many people don stop expecting anything from their leaders, you somehow make millions believe say better Nigeria is still possible.
“Well done. That no be small thing,” he added.
Obi remains one of Nigeria’s most prominent opposition politicians. He served as governor of Anambra State between 2006 and 2014 and built a reputation for fiscal discipline, investment in education and prudent management of public funds.
Following his tenure as governor, he emerged as a national political figure. He contested the 2019 presidential election as the vice-presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party before later joining the Labour Party, where he became the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election. He is now the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 general election.
Throughout his political career, Obi has consistently advocated prudent management of public resources, investment in education, healthcare and production-driven economic policies. He has also remained vocal on issues relating to insecurity, poverty, unemployment and governance.
His political movement has attracted strong support, particularly among young Nigerians, many of whom see him as a symbol of accountability and reform. His supporters, popularly known as the “Obidient” movement, have remained active in civic and political engagement since the 2023 elections.
