Troops of Operation SAVANNAH SHIELD have killed four suspected kidnappers and rescued an abducted victim during a military operation in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State.
The operation, carried out in the early hours of July 22, is part of ongoing efforts by security forces to tackle kidnapping and other violent crimes in Kwara and neighbouring states.
According to military sources, the operation was conducted by troops of Sector 1 deployed at the Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Kaiama.
The troops reportedly acted on credible intelligence indicating that a group of suspected kidnappers would pass through a known crossing point along the Jonloji Village riverine axis.
Based on the intelligence, the soldiers laid an ambush at the location around 4:00 a.m. and waited for the suspected criminals to arrive.
When the suspects reached the area, the troops engaged them in a fierce gun battle.
Four of the suspected kidnappers were killed during the exchange of gunfire, while others were believed to have fled with injuries.
During the operation, the soldiers also rescued one person who had been abducted by the gang.
The rescued victim was immediately evacuated to the General Hospital in Kaiama for medical treatment and further care.
Military sources said the successful operation also led to the recovery of one pump-action shotgun, four motorcycles and N64,000 in cash believed to belong to the suspected kidnappers.
According to the report, the motorcycles were likely used by the gang to move through difficult terrain and carry out their operations in remote communities.
The recovered firearm and other items have been taken into custody as part of ongoing investigations.
The military described the operation as another major success in the fight against kidnapping and organised crime in the North Central region.
