The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has issued fresh guidelines for prospective corps members ahead of the next orientation exercise, advising them to avoid travelling at night and ensure that all their registration documents are in order before reporting to camp.
The scheme also warned that prospective corps members whose graduation dates on their call-up letters do not match those on their statements of results will not be registered at orientation camps until the discrepancies are resolved.
The new guidelines were contained in a notice posted on the NYSC’s official X account on Monday as preparations continue for the forthcoming orientation programme across the country.
According to the management of the scheme, prospective corps members should place their personal safety above all else while travelling to their designated orientation camps.
“Prospective Corps Members are advised not to travel at night to the orientation camp,” the NYSC stated.
The warning comes amid continued security concerns on some highways across Nigeria, where incidents of armed robbery, kidnapping and road accidents have been reported in recent years.
The NYSC has repeatedly advised corps members to plan their journeys properly, travel during daylight hours and use safe and recognised transport companies when heading to orientation camps.
The scheme also reminded prospective corps members that arriving safely at camp is more important than reporting on the first day of registration.
The management urged candidates to leave early enough to avoid unnecessary pressure and risky journeys.
Apart from travel safety, the NYSC drew attention to documentation requirements that must be met before registration at orientation camps.
It specifically warned that any discrepancy between the graduation date on a candidate’s call-up letter and the graduation date on the statement of results would prevent registration.
According to the scheme, such candidates will not be allowed to complete the registration process until the issue has been corrected.
“Prospective Corps Members with discrepancies in the date of graduation on their call-up letters and the date on their statement of results will not be registered in the orientation camp,” the statement said.
The NYSC advised affected candidates to contact their institutions through their Student Affairs Officers (SAOs) to correct the discrepancies before reporting to camp.
“They should sort out such issues with the Student Affairs Officers (SAOs) before reporting to the camp,” the notice added.
The scheme stressed that resolving such issues in advance would save prospective corps members from delays and disappointment during camp registration.
The NYSC also reminded candidates to complete all required online registration procedures before travelling to camp.
It directed them to print and sign the necessary registration forms, which will be submitted during physical registration at the orientation camp.
“Prospective Corps Members are advised to print and sign the form, which is to be submitted during registration at the orientation camp,” the scheme stated.
The management explained that failure to present the required documents could delay or affect the registration process.
In addition, the NYSC issued fresh instructions for prospective corps members seeking to correct their dates of birth on the NYSC portal.
According to the scheme, applicants must first obtain a 19-digit or 20-digit West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Verification PIN before beginning the correction process.
The correction can be carried out through the candidate’s personal dashboard on the NYSC portal.
The process requires applicants to click on the “Correction of Date of Birth” link, enter the WAEC Verification PIN, select the appropriate WAEC examination type, indicate the examination year, provide the examination number, verify the information and submit the application.
The scheme encouraged candidates to complete the process well ahead of the orientation exercise to avoid last-minute difficulties.
The latest advisory forms part of the NYSC’s preparations for the mobilisation of a new batch of graduates for the mandatory one-year national service.
Established in 1973 following the Nigerian Civil War, the NYSC was created to promote national unity, integration and understanding among young graduates by posting them to states outside their places of origin.
Every year, thousands of graduates from universities and polytechnics across Nigeria participate in the programme after being mobilised by their institutions.
The service year begins with a three-week orientation course conducted simultaneously in camps across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
During the orientation programme, corps members undergo physical drills, lectures on national development, leadership training, entrepreneurship development, sports activities and other programmes designed to prepare them for the service year.
After the orientation exercise, corps members are posted to their places of primary assignment, where they serve in schools, hospitals, government ministries, private organisations and other institutions for the remainder of the service year.
Over the years, the NYSC has continued to introduce measures aimed at improving registration, reducing administrative errors and making the mobilisation process more transparent through the use of digital technology.
The scheme has also strengthened verification procedures to prevent cases of certificate fraud, identity manipulation and other irregularities during mobilisation.
Officials have repeatedly advised prospective corps members to rely only on information published through the NYSC’s official communication channels and to ignore false announcements circulated on social media.
The latest guidelines are expected to help prospective corps members prepare adequately for the orientation exercise while reducing avoidable registration challenges at the camps.
With mobilisation activities already underway, the NYSC urged all prospective corps members to strictly comply with the safety and registration requirements to ensure a smooth orientation exercise.
The scheme maintained that proper documentation, early preparation and safe travel arrangements would not only make registration easier but also enable corps members to begin their national service without unnecessary delays or complications.
