The Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai has reportedly neutralised nine suspected terrorists and destroyed three carts believed to be carrying weapons and other logistics during a precision airstrike in Dumba, Borno State.
The operation was carried out on Saturday, August 8, following credible intelligence on the activities of suspected terrorists around the Dumba area.
A security source said the air operation was conducted as part of efforts by the military to disrupt terrorist movements and prevent them from regrouping in the area.
The operation was reportedly carried out during an armed reconnaissance and air interdiction mission by the Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai, the military operation responsible for counter-insurgency activities in the North-East.
According to the source, the aircraft established its presence over Dumba at about 2:58 p.m. after receiving intelligence indicating that suspected terrorists were operating in the area.
The aircraft reportedly conducted surveillance of the area before identifying two groups of suspected terrorists.
The first group consisted of three suspected terrorists who were seen walking along a road, while another group of six terrorists was reportedly sighted pushing three carts.
The carts were suspected to be carrying weapons and other materials intended to support terrorist operations.
The aircraft did not immediately engage the targets, according to the security source.
Instead, the crew maintained surveillance and continued tracking the two groups as they moved through the area.
The source said the aircraft followed the suspects until the two groups eventually converged and stopped at a location inside the bush.
It was at this point that the military reportedly carried out the airstrike.
The attack was said to have successfully neutralised the nine suspected terrorists and destroyed the three carts.
“Rather than engaging immediately, the aircraft maintained surveillance and tracked the terrorists until both groups converged and came to a halt at a location inside the bush,” the source said.
The latest operation is part of the military’s continued efforts to weaken terrorist groups operating in Borno and other parts of the North-East.
Borno State has remained at the centre of Nigeria’s counter-insurgency campaign since the Boko Haram insurgency began more than a decade ago.
The conflict has led to the loss of thousands of lives, displacement of communities and destruction of homes, schools, farms and other infrastructure.
