Four adult men were killed on Thursday after a disagreement reportedly escalated into communal unrest at Power Line Bus Stop, Ikola, in the Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State.
Several other people sustained injuries during the incident, while a number of makeshift structures were reportedly burnt as the unrest spread through the area.
The cause of the disagreement was not immediately clear, but an eyewitness source said the incident began after an argument between a northerner and a man suspected to be a leader of a cult group in the community.
According to the source, the disagreement later turned violent when the northerner allegedly stabbed the suspected cult leader.
The source said the incident quickly drew other residents into the dispute and led to a wider confrontation, forcing policemen from the Meiran Division to call for reinforcement.
“What I know right now is that a Northerner stabbed a former leader of a cult group. This action triggered the riot that policemen from the Meiran Division had to call for reinforcement,” the source said.
The source initially confirmed one death but said there were reports of additional casualties.
However, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency later confirmed that four people had died in the unrest.
The Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the agency received a distress call concerning a fire outbreak in the area at about 1:52 p.m.
According to him, LASEMA immediately deployed its response team, which arrived at the scene about 25 minutes later.
A preliminary assessment and engagement with residents showed that the incident had started with a disagreement before escalating into communal unrest.
“Regrettably, four adult males lost their lives and several others sustained various degrees of injuries,” the agency said.
The emergency agency said the unrest also resulted in the destruction of several makeshift structures in the area.
Emergency medical support was provided to injured victims by the Agbado Oke-Odo Ambulance Service, the Nigerian Red Cross Society and other health responders.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service was also deployed and succeeded in bringing the fire under control.
The fire service subsequently carried out damping down operations to prevent the fire from spreading to other structures in the area.
As the situation became tense, security agencies mobilised to restore order and prevent further violence.
Oke-Osanyintolu said a joint security operation involving the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Army, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps was activated.
The security personnel were deployed to protect lives and property and prevent further breaches of public order.
The Chairman of the Agbado Oke-Odo Local Council Development Area was also present at the scene and assisted in coordinating the response with community leaders.
The emergency agency later said normalcy had been restored in Ikola and neighbouring communities.
Security personnel, however, remained deployed in the area to prevent a fresh outbreak of violence and ensure the safety of residents.
The incident came amid concerns over communal violence, cult-related clashes and other forms of insecurity in some parts of Lagos.
Alimosho is one of the most populated parts of Lagos State, with several densely populated communities and busy transport routes. Areas within the local government and surrounding local council development areas have, at different times, witnessed incidents involving cult groups, street violence and disputes that have escalated into wider clashes.
Security authorities have often warned residents against taking the law into their own hands, stressing the need for disputes to be reported to law enforcement agencies.
The use of violence to settle disagreements can quickly lead to wider confrontations, especially in densely populated communities where rumours and unverified information can spread rapidly.
LASEMA therefore urged residents of Ikola and surrounding communities to remain calm and avoid any action capable of worsening the situation.
The agency also warned residents against reprisals and the circulation of unverified information.
Oke-Osanyintolu appealed to members of the public to allow security agencies to complete their investigation into the incident rather than engaging in actions that could lead to further deaths or destruction of property.
He said a full investigation had commenced to determine both the immediate and remote causes of the unrest.
The investigation is also expected to establish what happened before the disagreement turned violent, identify those involved and determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths and destruction of property.
The Lagos State Government said anyone found culpable would face the law.
The government’s position reflects the wider concern over communal disputes that can quickly become difficult to control once groups of people become involved.
Community leaders are also expected to play an important role in calming tensions and discouraging retaliation.
In situations involving allegations of cult activity or communal conflict, security agencies usually need the cooperation of residents to identify those responsible and prevent further violence.
The emergency agency commended the various security and emergency response teams, community leaders and residents for their cooperation during the incident.
It also praised the quick response of emergency personnel, who provided medical assistance to injured victims and worked to prevent the fire from spreading.
