The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has disowned a fake “Letter of Provisional Offer of Employment” being circulated by unauthorised persons claiming to represent the agency.
FAAN, in a statement issued on Thursday through its official X account, said it was not currently conducting any recruitment exercise and had no connection with the purported employment letter or other job offers being circulated.
The authority warned members of the public, particularly job seekers, not to fall victim to the fraudulent recruitment scheme.
It advised anyone who receives such offers not to make payments, disclose personal information or engage with the individuals behind the purported recruitment exercise.
FAAN said, “FAAN wishes to state categorically that the Authority is not currently conducting any recruitment exercise and disassociates itself from this letter and any related employment offers.”
The agency added, “Members of the public are advised not to make payments, provide personal information, or engage with individuals issuing such offers.”
The warning comes amid growing cases of fraudulent job advertisements in Nigeria, with scammers often targeting unemployed young people and other job seekers with promises of employment in government agencies and private organisations.
Such scams may involve fake appointment letters, online forms, interview invitations and requests for payments described as processing, training, documentation or administrative fees.
In some cases, victims are also asked to provide sensitive personal details such as bank account information, identification numbers, residential addresses and telephone numbers. Such information can later be used for financial or identity fraud.
FAAN therefore urged members of the public to remain vigilant and verify any recruitment information before taking action.
The authority stressed that genuine information about its recruitment activities would be communicated through its official channels.
“All authentic information regarding recruitment will be communicated through FAAN’s official channels,” it said.
The latest warning is particularly important given the high demand for government jobs in Nigeria, where vacancies in federal agencies often attract large numbers of applicants.
Government employment is generally seen as attractive because of the stability and benefits associated with public service. This has created opportunities for fraudsters to exploit job seekers who are willing to pay money or provide personal details in the hope of securing employment.
FAAN is a major government agency responsible for managing and maintaining federal airports and related facilities in Nigeria. Its operations cover airports across the country and involve a wide range of technical, administrative, security and support services.
As a result, recruitment into the authority can attract significant public interest whenever vacancies are officially announced.
The agency’s clarification means that members of the public should treat any current offer of employment allegedly issued by FAAN with suspicion unless it is confirmed through the authority’s recognised communication platforms.
Job seekers are also advised to be careful with unsolicited messages received through social media, WhatsApp, email or other online platforms.
Fraudsters can make fake documents appear genuine by using government logos, official-looking letterheads, signatures and names of senior officials.
However, the presence of such details does not prove that a recruitment offer is authentic.
FAAN’s latest statement also highlights the importance of checking information directly with the organisation before making payments or sharing personal details.
Members of the public should avoid relying solely on information forwarded by friends, family members or social media accounts, particularly when the message involves requests for money.
The authority specifically warned people against engaging with individuals issuing the fake offers.
This is because victims who respond to fraudulent recruitment messages may be asked to make a series of payments before being given what the scammers claim will be their appointment or posting details.
In addition to financial losses, victims may have their personal information stolen and used for other fraudulent activities.
The Federal Government and various public agencies have repeatedly warned Nigerians about fake recruitment schemes. Official recruitment exercises are normally announced through recognised government channels, while applicants are expected to follow stated procedures rather than paying individuals who claim to have influence over the process.
FAAN’s warning is therefore expected to help prevent members of the public from losing money or exposing themselves to identity theft through the latest fake employment letter.
The authority urged Nigerians to remain alert and to verify recruitment-related claims before responding.
It also encouraged members of the public to rely on its official communication channels for accurate information about vacancies and other employment opportunities.
