President Bola Tinubu has extended his congratulations to two British Nigerians, Opeyemi Bright and Jason Jackson, on their recent historic election and inauguration as Mayors in London. The President expressed pride in their achievements and commended their dedication to serving their communities.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu acknowledged the significant milestones Bright and Jackson had reached in their political careers. Their new roles as Mayors in Barking and Dagenham, and Islington, respectively, mark important firsts for Nigerian representation in the UK’s local government.
“On behalf of the government and people of Nigeria, I extend heartfelt congratulations to Mayors Opeyemi Bright and Jason Jackson. I urge you to continue giving your best in your new roles as the first citizens of Barking and Dagenham, and Islington,” President Tinubu said in his statement.
Tinubu also emphasized that their success would serve as an inspiration to Nigerians, both at home and in the diaspora, encouraging young people to strive for excellence, serve their communities, and promote values like honesty, hard work, and commitment.
Opeyemi Bright, at the age of 29, made history as the youngest-ever Civic Mayor of Barking and Dagenham, after seven years of dedicated service to her community. Bright’s journey to this historic position started with her becoming the borough’s youngest-ever Labour councillor at just 22 in 2018. Bright’s rise reflects her deep commitment to public service and the community, which she has continuously worked to improve.
Jason Jackson, another trailblazer, made history as the first Nigerian-born Mayor of Islington. Before his appointment, Jackson quickly rose through the ranks of local government. He was first elected as a councillor in 2022 and became Chair of Islington’s Homes and Communities Committee in 2023. His election as Mayor follows his rapid ascent within the council, marking him as a significant figure in the borough’s political scene.
Both mayors are examples of Nigerian excellence in the diaspora, and their achievements highlight the growing influence of Nigerians in global leadership. Their contributions to their communities in London are being celebrated not only by Nigerians but also by a broader international audience.
President Tinubu expressed full confidence in their abilities to make a positive impact in their respective boroughs, noting that the two mayors’ success stories represent the hard work and dedication that Nigerians are known for worldwide. He encouraged them to continue striving for the betterment of their communities, while making Nigeria proud on the global stage.
Their election and appointment to these historic roles are a source of pride for both the Nigerian government and the broader Nigerian community in the UK.
