The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather forecast predicting widespread thunderstorms across the country from Wednesday through Friday, warning citizens to take necessary safety precautions.
In a statement released Tuesday in Abuja, NiMet said several states in the North, North-Central, and Southern parts of Nigeria should expect morning, afternoon, and evening thunderstorms over the next few days.
On Wednesday, thunderstorms are likely in the morning over parts of Taraba, Kaduna, Kebbi, Sokoto, and Zamfara states. Later in the day, the storms are expected to spread to Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Kano, Katsina, and others in the North.
The North-Central region, including Plateau, Nasarawa, Niger, Kwara, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), will experience morning storms, while Kogi and Benue are likely to be affected in the afternoon and evening.
In the Southern region, morning thunderstorms are forecast for Ogun, Ondo, Delta, Cross River, Bayelsa, Rivers, Lagos, and Akwa Ibom, with more areas expected to be affected by afternoon and evening.
On Thursday, early storms are expected in Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara, while Taraba, Adamawa, Kaduna, Gombe, and Bauchi may experience rainfall later in the day. The North-Central region will mostly have sunny skies, but some areas such as Benue, Kogi, and Kwara may still see isolated thunderstorms.
Friday’s outlook includes morning storms in Adamawa, Taraba, and Kaduna, with possible continuation into the afternoon. North-Central states like Plateau, Nasarawa, FCT, Benue, and Kogi will see a mix of sunshine, cloudiness, and isolated thunderstorms.
NiMet has cautioned Nigerians to stay alert as strong winds may come before the thunderstorms. Residents are advised to secure loose items, avoid driving in heavy rain, unplug electrical appliances, and stay away from tall trees during storms.
Airline operators have also been advised to get location-specific weather updates from NiMet for safe flight planning.
