The Kano State Police Command has announced a total ban on Durbar activities across the state during the upcoming Eid-el-Kabir celebrations.
In a joint statement released on Tuesday and signed by heads of sister security agencies, the command reiterated that the ban—first enforced during the 2025 Eid-el-Fitr celebrations—remains fully in effect and will be strictly enforced throughout the festive period.
The decision, according to the statement, is based on credible intelligence reports suggesting that some miscreants and their sponsors may be planning to use the Durbar festivities to create unrest and disrupt public peace in the state.
“Following extensive consultations with relevant security stakeholders and based on available intelligence, the ban on all Durbar activities will be strictly implemented,” the statement read.
Durbar, a traditional horse-riding event that often features elaborate displays and attracts thousands of spectators, has been a significant part of Kano’s cultural identity. However, due to rising concerns about safety and political tension in recent times, authorities are taking no chances.
The command warned that during Eid-el-Kabir, activities such as horse and animal riding, car racing, reckless driving, and the carrying of firearms or dangerous weapons would not be tolerated. The public is also cautioned against carrying suspicious objects or engaging in any activity that could lead to a breakdown of law and order.
The police urged parents and guardians to warn their children and wards against participating in any unlawful activity. Officers, in collaboration with other security agencies, are said to be fully prepared to enforce the law and maintain peace.
While congratulating Muslims and residents ahead of the Eid celebration, the police appealed for calm, cooperation, and law-abiding behaviour during the festivities.
“We urge residents to conduct themselves peacefully and pray for the peace and prosperity of Kano State and Nigeria at large,” the statement concluded.
The command also remembered the state’s athletes who recently died while returning from the National Sports Festival, calling on residents to honour their memory with prayers and acts of goodwill during Eid.
