A dramatic moment unfolded at the Kano Government House on Sunday when a drone unexpectedly fell near the head of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II during a Sallah homage ceremony.
The incident happened while the emir was delivering a speech and was caught on video, which quickly spread across social media platforms. Initial reactions and rumours suggested that the emir had been stoned or hit by some other object during the event, sparking confusion and concern among observers.
However, eyewitnesses and the drone operator have since clarified what really happened, putting the rumours to rest.
According to the drone operator, Salim Ameenu, the drone lost control due to a low battery and crashed close to the emir by accident. In a statement released on social media on Monday, Ameenu expressed deep regret for the incident and apologized to Emir Sanusi, stressing that the event was unintentional.
“Yesterday, I unintentionally flew my drone over His Royal Highness during his speech at Hawan Nasarawa. Due to a low battery, I lost control of the drone, and unfortunately, it fell near His Royal Highness,” Ameenu said.
He went on to praise the emir’s calm and composure, saying, “What happened has only strengthened my admiration for HRH’s composure and bravery. His Royal Highness simply glanced at the drone and continued his speech without hesitation — a true display of courage and grace under pressure.”
The drone incident took place during the traditional Sallah homage ceremony where the emir was paying respects to the Kano state government.
The drama surrounding the drone event gained extra attention because of the ongoing political and traditional conflict in Kano involving two rival emirs.
Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II was dethroned by the former governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, in March 2020 and replaced with Aminu Ado Bayero. However, after the 2023 state elections, the new governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, reinstated Sanusi as the emir, leading to a complex and tense situation with two parallel emirates existing simultaneously.
Currently, both emirs occupy separate palaces within Kano metropolis. Sanusi holds court at the historic Emir’s Palace, while Aminu Ado Bayero resides at another palace in the Nassarawa area.
This unusual dual emirate situation has caused confusion, rivalry, and occasional unrest in Kano, as both emirs have their supporters and followers.
The drone crash added fuel to the heated atmosphere in Kano, leading to immediate speculation on social media. Some users quickly assumed the emir was attacked by angry individuals, interpreting the drone fall as an act of aggression.
However, with the drone operator’s explanation and eyewitness reports, it has become clear that the event was accidental and not an attack.
Many Nigerians have since praised Emir Sanusi’s calm reaction, highlighting his ability to remain composed under pressure despite the sudden disruption.
The incident is a reminder of the tense political and cultural atmosphere in Kano, where the rivalry between two emirs continues to affect governance and social peace.
The drone crash, though accidental, brought to light the deep divisions within the state’s traditional leadership.
Observers believe that resolving the dual emir issue remains crucial to restoring full peace and unity in Kano.
For now, Emir Sanusi continues to carry out his duties amid the ongoing crisis, with many hoping for a peaceful and lasting resolution.
