    Army Kills Bandit, Recovers Weapons in Benue

    Troops of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) have killed a suspected bandit and uncovered a hidden weapons cache during a military raid in Mararaba Gbagi, Benue State.

    The operation took place on Tuesday, July 30, 2025, following intelligence reports about the presence of armed criminals in the area.

    According to Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu Zubairu, Acting Media Information Officer of OPWS, the troops came under fire and responded swiftly, killing one suspect while others escaped with gunshot wounds.

    “In the course of the firefight, the troops successfully neutralized one criminal and recovered a significant arms cache,” he said.

    Weapons recovered include six AK-47 magazines, three 9mm bullets, two 7.62mm special rounds, one locally made gun, and one locally made pistol.

    In addition to the arms, the soldiers also destroyed charms and shrines allegedly used by the criminals for protection.

    Commander of OPWS, Major General Moses Gara, praised the troops for their discipline and courage. He said the operation sends a clear message to bandits and criminals that they have no hiding place.

    He also urged residents to cooperate with security agencies by sharing useful information.

    Operation Whirl Stroke was launched to tackle banditry, terrorism, and communal clashes in Benue, Nasarawa, Taraba, and parts of Niger State. The military says it remains committed to restoring peace in the region.
