The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has issued a strong warning to event centres, nightclubs, lounges, and organisers of social events over the growing problem of road obstruction during parties and gatherings.
During unannounced inspections across traffic-prone areas of Lagos, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed serious concern over the increasing use of public roads for illegal parking and crowd spillover.
He said such practices contribute significantly to traffic gridlock, delay emergency response, and cause stress for law-abiding road users.
“It must be made clear that no one, no matter how influential, has the right to turn public roads into private parking spaces,” Bakare-Oki said.
He stressed that under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration, the state would not tolerate any misuse of public infrastructure.
Bakare-Oki warned that any event venue found blocking access roads, encouraging illegal parking, or encroaching on road shoulders would face sanctions, including legal action.
To curb the problem, he directed all zonal commanders and field units to step up patrols, especially during weekends, festive seasons, and large events.
He also urged business owners in the hospitality and entertainment sectors to act responsibly by hiring certified traffic managers or working with LASTMA to create approved traffic management plans for major gatherings.
“This is a shared responsibility. Event organisers must begin to prioritise public safety and respect the rights of other road users,” he added.
Members of the public were encouraged to report violations via LASTMA’s toll-free emergency line.
This enforcement move is part of a wider effort to improve traffic flow, public safety, and urban discipline across Lagos State.
