Activist and former co-convener of the Bring Back Our Girls (BBOG) campaign, Aisha Yesufu, has accused President Bola Tinubu of rigging the 2023 election not to serve the country, but to enjoy the benefits of being in office.
Yesufu made this statement on Thursday via her X (formerly Twitter) handle while reacting to comments by Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, who criticized President Tinubu’s plan to embark on another foreign trip amid Nigeria’s deepening economic and security challenges.
Obi condemned Tinubu’s decision to travel to Japan and Brazil, shortly after returning from a previous international trip, describing it as “insensitive” and out of touch with the country’s dire situation.
“How can anyone explain that a President who came from Brazil recently and met with the President is returning to the same country, leaving the various degrees of challenges at home unresolved?” Obi queried.
In her reaction, Yesufu backed Obi’s criticism, mocking Tinubu with the nickname “Agba baller” — a term used to describe someone who is more interested in enjoyment than responsibility.
“Mr Tinubu did not rig election to govern, he rigged election to enjoy the perks of office. Agba baller,” Yesufu posted.
The comment has stirred conversation on social media, with many Nigerians expressing frustration over the president’s frequent travels and the ongoing economic hardship in the country.
Critics argue that the president’s actions show a lack of urgency in dealing with pressing national issues such as inflation, insecurity, and poverty.
