Hundreds of armed political thugs have been arrested in Kano State during a by-election, raising serious concerns about election violence and insecurity.
The thugs were caught while attempting to enter Bagwai, one of the voting areas, according to the Kano State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Ambassador Abdu Zango. He confirmed that security agents intercepted the suspects before they could cause any trouble.
In a separate incident, thugs around Shanono Local Government Area tried to disrupt the movement of election materials. However, swift action by security personnel helped prevent a breakdown of law and order.
Shanono is known for political violence during elections, but the REC noted that the presence of security forces has helped maintain peace and order during this by-election.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies have repeatedly warned against violence, urging all political actors to respect the democratic process.
The by-election in Kano was called to fill a vacant legislative seat and is being closely watched due to the state’s history of tense and sometimes violent electoral contests.
