The Kwara State Government has ordered the immediate removal of all Local Government Treasurers and Directors of Personnel Management (DPMs) across the 16 local government areas of the state.
The directive was issued in a circular dated October 13, 2025, by the Kwara State Local Government Service Commission and signed by Mallam R. D. Mustapha on behalf of the commission’s chairman.
According to the circular, the affected officers are to hand over without delay to the Heads of Departments (Administration) and accountants in their respective councils.
“This temporary arrangement will remain in place pending the appointment of substantive Directors of Personnel Management and treasurers,” the statement added.
The government has not given any official reason for the sweeping shake-up, but insiders suggest it may be part of ongoing reforms aimed at improving transparency, accountability, and efficiency in local government administration.
The decision comes amid growing calls for restructuring at the grassroots level in order to curb financial mismanagement and improve service delivery to rural communities.
Local government councils in Nigeria are constitutionally responsible for basic services like primary education, healthcare, and sanitation, but have often faced criticism for poor financial management and weak internal controls.
The Kwara State Government has in recent months intensified efforts to strengthen public service institutions and reduce bureaucratic bottlenecks in line with its development agenda.
It remains unclear when the new appointments will be made, but officials say the restructuring is part of a broader plan to reposition local governments for better performance.
