Troops of the Nigerian Army have killed 19 bandits during a fierce gun battle in Shanono Local Government Area of Kano State. However, two soldiers and a local vigilante lost their lives in the operation, the Army confirmed on Sunday.

The incident occurred around 5:00 p.m. on Friday, November 1, 2025, after troops of Operation MESA received intelligence about the movement of bandits around Ungwan Tudu, Ungwan Tsamiya, and Goron Dutse areas of Shanono. The operation was led by officers from the 3rd Brigade of the Nigerian Army, in collaboration with other security agencies.

According to a statement by Captain Babatunde Zubairu, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, the troops quickly mobilized and confronted the armed bandits, who had stormed the area on motorcycles. A heavy exchange of gunfire followed, during which 19 of the attackers were neutralized. Several motorcycles and two mobile phones were also recovered from the criminals.

“The intervention commenced when our troops swiftly responded to reports of bandits’ movements in the area. Troops deployed at Tsaure came in contact with the bandits, which led to an exchange of fire. Our men successfully pursued and neutralized the criminals,” Captain Zubairu said.

He added that while the operation was successful, the Army regretted the loss of two gallant soldiers and one vigilante who paid the supreme price defending the community.
