Amaechi Dismisses Running Mate Speculations, Declares Presidential Ambition

    Share

Former Minister of Transportation and ex-Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, has firmly rejected suggestions that he could run as a vice-presidential candidate with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar or be part of any joint presidential ticket in the 2027 elections.

Speaking through his media aide, David Iyofor, Amaechi made it clear that his ambition is solely to become the President of Nigeria. “Amaechi is not seeking to be running mate to anybody. He does not intend to be a presidential running mate to anybody and will not,” Iyofor said.

This clarification comes in response to comments by media entrepreneur and Atiku ally, Dele Momodu, who suggested that Amaechi could be considered as a running mate for Atiku should Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate, decline a joint ticket. Momodu stated, “A lot of people are underrating Amaechi. Amaechi single-handedly handed power to Buhari… If Obi does not make up his mind or chooses to run alone, then I believe the mantle might fall on Rotimi Amaechi.”

Rotimi Amaechi has been a prominent figure in Nigerian politics for over two decades. He served as Governor of Rivers State from 2007 to 2015 and later as Minister of Transportation under President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. Known for his organizational skills and political mobilization capacity, Amaechi played a significant role in previous elections, particularly in the South-South region.

In 2023, Amaechi contested the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential ticket but lost the party nomination. Earlier this year, he defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where he has declared his intention to seek the party’s nomination for the 2027 presidential election.

According to Iyofor, Amaechi believes it is the turn of Southern Nigeria to produce the next president and is pursuing the ADC ticket with that principle in mind. “Amaechi is not aware of, and will not be part of any talk to be running mate to anybody. For emphasis, Amaechi is running to be President of Nigeria and not to be a running mate to anybody. Politicians are kindly advised to leave Amaechi’s name out of any discussion for presidential running mate,” Iyofor emphasized.

Amaechi’s decision to focus entirely on the presidency reflects a strategic political move, particularly as the 2027 elections approach and Southern Nigeria continues to advocate for equitable representation in national leadership. Analysts note that his declaration may reshape alliances and calculations within political parties, particularly in the South-South and South-East regions.

The African Democratic Congress, Amaechi’s current party, is positioning itself as a viable alternative to Nigeria’s major parties—the APC and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Though historically smaller, the ADC has gained attention due to high-profile defections, including Amaechi’s move from APC. Political observers suggest that his entry into the party could strengthen its influence, particularly among Southern voters seeking representation at the national level.

The speculation linking Amaechi as a potential running mate for Atiku stems from his high-profile political achievements and influence. Dele Momodu’s comments highlighted Amaechi’s past contributions, including his role in mobilizing support for President Buhari during previous elections and his record as a strategic political organizer.

However, Amaechi’s response makes it clear that he rejects any notion of being a second-in-command, highlighting that his political focus is on assuming the presidency and addressing national governance challenges himself.

Amaechi’s announcement is likely to impact political calculations in both the APC and PDP, as well as smaller parties seeking to position themselves for the 2027 elections. By rejecting a vice-presidential slot, he signals independence and presidential ambition, potentially attracting voters who prioritize Southern representation in the presidency.

Beyond the political maneuvering, Amaechi has long positioned himself as a leader concerned with development and governance. During his tenure as Rivers State Governor, he was credited with improving infrastructure, particularly road construction, urban development, and educational facilities. His experience as Minister of Transportation also gave him insight into national infrastructure and logistics, which he cites as key priorities for any future administration he hopes to lead.

Supporters argue that Amaechi’s track record and administrative experience make him a credible presidential candidate, especially at a time when Nigerians are demanding more accountable and results-oriented leadership.

As the 2027 elections approach, Amaechi’s firm stance may influence party nominations, regional alignments, and voter expectations. His decision to run for president under the ADC, while rejecting any vice-presidential slot, positions him as a contender who is both independent and ambitious, focusing on his own vision for Nigeria rather than being part of a coalition led by another candidate.
