President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a new set of appointments into key government agencies, naming a new Chairman for the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and nominating seven commissioners for the National Population Commission (NPC).

The appointments were announced on Monday in a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

According to the statement, the nominations for the NPC are subject to confirmation by the National Assembly, in line with constitutional provisions.

At the centre of the appointments is the selection of Ibrahim Ida as the new Chairman of the Corporate Affairs Commission.

The CAC is a key government agency responsible for the registration and regulation of companies and businesses in Nigeria. It plays a central role in improving the ease of doing business in the country.

Ida, who is from Katsina State, brings years of experience in public service and governance to the role.

He holds a master’s degree in Banking and Finance from the University of Ibadan, obtained in 1983, as well as a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from the University of Abuja, earned in 2003.

Over the years, he has held several important positions. He served as Commissioner of Finance in Katsina State and later rose to the position of Permanent Secretary in the Federal Civil Service.

In 2017, he was elected as a senator representing Katsina Central, further strengthening his political profile.

In addition to the CAC appointment, President Tinubu also nominated seven individuals to fill vacant commissioner positions at the National Population Commission.

The NPC is responsible for conducting population censuses and managing demographic data in Nigeria. Its role is critical for national planning, resource allocation, and policy development.

Although the names of the nominees were not detailed in the statement, the Presidency confirmed that their appointments would only take effect after screening and approval by the National Assembly.

Nigeria has not conducted a national population census since 2006, and efforts to organise a new census have faced delays due to funding, logistics, and political concerns.

The President also approved other appointments across government institutions.

Among them is the appointment of Yusuf Mohammed from Kano State as Chairman of the Federal Polytechnic, Kaltungo.

Federal polytechnics play an important role in Nigeria’s education system by providing technical and vocational training to students.

In another move, Tinubu appointed Bala Bello as Special Adviser on Political Economy.

Bello, who is from Kebbi State, has a strong background in finance and economic policy.

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Ahmadu Bello University.

Before this appointment, Bello served as a Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, one of the country’s most important financial institutions.

He also worked as Executive Director (Corporate Services) at the Nigerian Export-Import Bank between 2017 and 2022.

The Presidency expressed confidence that the newly appointed officials would contribute positively to the administration’s goals.

“President Tinubu strongly believes in the capacities of the appointees to put in their best to further the administration’s commitment to a better lease of life for Nigerians,” the statement said.

The appointments are seen as part of ongoing efforts by the administration to strengthen key institutions and improve governance.

The Corporate Affairs Commission has become increasingly important in recent years as Nigeria seeks to improve its business environment.

Reforms at the CAC, including online company registration and faster processing times, have helped make it easier for entrepreneurs to start and run businesses.

With a new chairman in place, stakeholders will be watching closely to see whether these reforms are sustained and expanded.

Similarly, the National Population Commission plays a crucial role in national development.

Accurate population data is essential for planning in areas such as healthcare, education, housing, and infrastructure.

However, Nigeria’s last census was conducted nearly two decades ago, and there have been repeated calls for an updated headcount.

While there has been no widespread public reaction yet, analysts say the appointments reflect a mix of political experience and technical expertise.

They note that the success of the appointees will depend on their ability to deliver results in their respective roles.

For the CAC, expectations are high in terms of improving service delivery and supporting businesses.

For the NPC, attention will be on preparations for a possible future census and improving data management systems.

As the nominees for the National Population Commission await confirmation by the National Assembly, attention will also be on how quickly the new appointees settle into their roles.
