Taiwan has declared that it is an “independent” and sovereign nation following comments by United States President Donald Trump warning the island against making a formal declaration of independence.
The statement from Taiwan’s foreign ministry on Saturday is the latest development in the long-running dispute involving Taiwan, China and the United States, a conflict that has continued to raise tensions in Asia and across the international community.
In its response, Taiwan insisted that it already functions as an independent democratic state and is not controlled by China.
“Taiwan is a sovereign and independent democratic nation, and is not subordinate to the People’s Republic of China,” the ministry said in an official statement.
The ministry also noted that since Trump returned to office, the United States government had repeatedly maintained that its policy toward Taiwan had not changed.
The comments came only hours after Trump reportedly warned Taiwan against pursuing what Washington and Beijing describe as “formal independence,” a move China has consistently opposed.
Although Trump’s full remarks were not immediately released in detail, his warning has drawn global attention because of the sensitive nature of relations between China and Taiwan.
China considers Taiwan part of its territory and has repeatedly vowed to reunify the island with the mainland, by force if necessary. Taiwan, however, operates its own government, military and democratic political system.
The issue has remained one of the biggest flashpoints in global politics and has frequently strained relations between Beijing and Washington.
The United States officially recognizes the “One China” policy, which acknowledges Beijing as the government of China, but Washington also maintains close unofficial ties with Taiwan and remains one of its main security partners.
Over the years, the US has continued to supply Taiwan with weapons and military support, a move strongly criticised by China.
Taiwanese leaders have consistently argued that the island’s future should be decided by its people and not by the Chinese government.
Beijing, on the other hand, sees any move toward formal Taiwanese independence as a direct threat to Chinese sovereignty and national unity.
The latest exchange between Taiwan and the United States comes at a time of rising military and political tension in the region.
In recent years, China has increased military activities around Taiwan, including fighter jet patrols, naval drills and military exercises near the island.
Chinese officials say such actions are meant to defend China’s territorial integrity and warn against foreign interference.
Taiwan has accused Beijing of intimidation and pressure tactics aimed at forcing the island into submission.
International observers have repeatedly warned that tensions in the Taiwan Strait could become a major global security crisis if not carefully managed.
The Taiwan Strait is one of the world’s most important trade routes, especially for the shipment of electronics and semiconductors used in mobile phones, computers and other modern technology.
Taiwan is home to some of the world’s largest semiconductor manufacturers, making stability in the region important to the global economy.
Trump’s latest comments are also being closely watched because of his influence on US foreign policy and relations with China.
During his previous presidency, relations between Washington and Beijing became tense over trade disputes, military activities, technology restrictions and Taiwan.
Since returning to office, Trump has maintained a tough stance on China, although his warning against Taiwanese independence appears aimed at preventing further escalation between both sides.
Taiwan’s latest statement appears intended to reassure its citizens and international partners that the island sees itself as already independent despite diplomatic pressure from Beijing.
Many countries, however, do not officially recognize Taiwan as a separate country because of China’s strong diplomatic influence and the global acceptance of the “One China” policy.
Despite this, Taiwan maintains unofficial relations and economic partnerships with many nations around the world.
The island has also built a strong democratic system and advanced economy, making it an important player in global trade and technology.
For years, the dispute between China and Taiwan has remained unresolved, with both sides maintaining different views about sovereignty and national identity.
While China insists Taiwan is part of its territory, many people in Taiwan increasingly identify themselves as Taiwanese rather than Chinese.
The situation continues to attract worldwide attention because of its possible impact on international peace and security.
For now, Taiwan’s latest declaration is likely to deepen discussions about the island’s political future and its complicated relationship with both China and the United States.
