PDP Chieftain Urges Atiku to Call Aides to Order

    Share

Barrister Taofik Gani, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State, has called on the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, to take decisive action against his aides following a series of controversial statements that have sparked tensions within the party.

Gani’s call comes in the wake of a heated dispute involving Paul Ibe, an aide to Atiku Abubakar, who recently criticized Chief Bode George, a senior PDP elder. The criticism, which accused Chief George of tribalism and questioned his suitability for military service, has intensified the internal rift within the PDP.

The disagreement centres around the PDP’s candidate selection process and its implications for party unity. George had voiced strong objections to the choice of Atiku Abubakar as the presidential candidate. He argued that after eight years of Northern presidency, it was against the PDP’s constitution and the spirit of power rotation to nominate another Northern candidate.

Paul Ibe’s response to George’s critique, which included accusations of tribalism, has been widely criticised by party members. According to Gani, Ibe’s statements not only lack substance but also reflect poorly on the party’s image.

In a statement issued on Monday, Gani criticized Atiku’s media aide’s, Paul Ibe, remarks as “illogical and poorly researched.” Gani argued that Chief Bode George, a Yoruba leader, has been one of the most vocal opponents of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its leadership, including President Buhari and President Tinubu, who are also Yoruba.

“Paul Ibe’s reaction is devoid of any logic or research,” Gani said. “Chief Bode George, as a Yoruba, stands out as a prominent elder in the PDP who has consistently challenged the APC. His commitment to the party and the country is evident, and accusing him of tribalism is not only misplaced but also undermines the integrity of the PDP.”

Gani further criticized Ibe and other aides of Atiku for their alleged incompetence and failure to understand public opinion. He stated, “Paul Ibe has confirmed what many already know – that a large portion of Atiku’s aides are ineffective, out of touch, and have contributed to Atiku’s failed ambitions.”

Gani urged Atiku Abubakar to distance himself from Ibe’s statements and take corrective measures. “Atiku should immediately dissociate from the statement made by Paul Ibe,” Gani advised.

“He should also consider removing Ibe from his team to prevent further damage to the party’s reputation.

“The emergence of Atiku as the candidate was seen by many as a political misstep,” Gani noted. “It led to the alienation of several key figures and weakened the PDP’s position, ultimately benefiting the opposition.”

He also defended Chief Bode George against accusations of tribalism, emphasising that George has had longstanding positive relationships with Northern leaders and played a crucial role in the election of late President Yar’Adua, a Northerner.

Gani’s remarks underscore the need for reflection and reconciliation within the PDP. He urged Atiku Abubakar and the party leadership to acknowledge the mistakes made in the 2023 election process and to work towards rebuilding party unity.

“If Atiku does not address the issues raised by Paul Ibe and reconcile with party elders, the controversy surrounding the 2023 election could continue to be a point of contention,” Gani warned. “Such unresolved issues could ultimately harm the PDP’s future prospects.”
