The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has shed light on the recent arrest of popular cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, widely known as Bobrisky.
Bobrisky was apprehended on Monday at the Seme border while allegedly attempting to flee the country.
The Service’s Public Relations Officer, DCI Kenneth Udo, confirmed that the cross-dresser is considered a “person of interest” in ongoing investigations.
Udo stated, “In keeping with its commitment to securing the borders, the Nigeria Immigration Service intercepted Okuneye Idris Olanrewaju, otherwise known as Bobrisky, at the Seme border over an attempt to exit the country.”
Sources from the Immigration Service revealed that Bobrisky’s arrest occurred during a routine passport check late at night.
He was reportedly trying to leave Nigeria discreetly when officers recognized his name while processing his passport.
An insider disclosed, “He tried to have someone else stamp his passport, but the officer demanded he step down from the vehicle.”
Following his arrest, Bobrisky was held overnight and is now being transferred to the Lagos zone of the Nigerian Immigration Service in Ikeja for further questioning.
The cross-dresser has been embroiled in controversy recently, facing allegations from social media influencer Martins Ortse, also known as VeryDarkMan.
Ortse claimed that Bobrisky paid N15 million to officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to drop money laundering charges against him.
Bobrisky has yet to respond publicly to these serious accusations.
In addition to the EFCC, he is under investigation by the House of Representatives and the Nigerian Correctional Service.
An investigative panel set up by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, revealed that Bobrisky completed a six-month jail term earlier this year.
The panel confirmed, “There is no evidence thus far that suggests that Mr. Okuneye slept outside the custodial centre during the period of his imprisonment, which was from April 12, 2024, to August 5, 2024.”
During this period, he served a six-month correctional sentence with the usual remission applicable.
Bobrisky’s recent arrest has sparked widespread discussions across social media platforms, with many users expressing their opinions on the unfolding situation.
Some commentators argue that Bobrisky’s celebrity status may complicate the legal processes he faces.
The NIS has assured the public that it is committed to maintaining professionalism in its operations.
Udo stated, “The Service assures the public that it will continue to be civil and professional in its statutory responsibility of manning the country’s borders.”
