Benin has summoned the Niger Republic’s chargé d’affaires following explosive allegations by Niger’s military junta leader, Abdourahamane Tchiani, accusing Benin of harboring terrorists and supporting activities aimed at destabilizing Niger. The accusations have ignited a diplomatic firestorm between the two neighboring West African nations, prompting Benin to take swift diplomatic action.

On January 1, 2025, Benin’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a formal protest, strongly rejecting Tchiani’s remarks. The ministry denounced the claims as “baseless and inflammatory,” further asserting that the accusations against Benin were completely unfounded. In a statement shared on the ministry’s official social media platforms, it was confirmed that the Nigerien chargé d’affaires had been summoned to provide clarification on the allegations made by Niger’s junta leader.

“The chargé d’affaires of Niger has been summoned due to the unfounded accusations against our country,” read the statement. “Benin categorically rejects these false claims and remains committed to peace and cooperation in the region.”

The dispute began on Christmas Day, when Niger’s military leader, Tchiani, accused Benin of acting as a staging ground for terrorist groups seeking to destabilize Niger and the wider Sahel region. In his speech, Tchiani painted a grim picture of Benin’s involvement in the broader turmoil plaguing West Africa, fueling an already tense relationship between the two countries. His comments have heightened concerns over regional security and sparked fears of further escalation.

These allegations are the latest in a series of disputes that have strained relations between Benin and Niger since Niger’s military coup in July 2023. The two nations have faced disagreements over issues such as border closures, oil exports, and trade policies, making Tchiani’s comments particularly sensitive. The diplomatic row has raised questions about the stability of the West African region, already plagued by terrorist activity, coups, and instability in the aftermath of several military takeovers.

While tensions between Benin and Niger have been simmering for months, there had been signs of reconciliation. Both countries appointed new ambassadors in recent months, signaling a desire to improve relations. However, Tchiani’s inflammatory accusations have thrown a wrench in the efforts to restore diplomatic ties.

In response to the growing tension, Benin’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Olushegun Bakari, delivered a formal protest letter to the Nigerien ambassador in Cotonou, denouncing the baseless terrorism claims and reiterating Benin’s commitment to regional stability and peaceful cooperation with its neighbors. The letter called for mutual respect and dialogue to resolve the dispute.

“Benin remains dedicated to dialogue and fraternal collaboration between the two countries,” the ministry stated. “We call for a peaceful resolution to all disagreements, as any baseless accusations could jeopardize the fragile stability of the region.”

The situation has attracted the attention of other regional players, particularly Nigeria, which has also found itself in the crossfire of similar accusations from Niger’s junta. Tchiani recently alleged that Nigeria was hosting a French military base aimed at destabilizing his government, a claim that was swiftly denied by Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.

Ribadu condemned the accusation, labeling it as “completely baseless” and affirming that Nigeria would never permit a foreign military base on its territory. Nigeria’s government has expressed a willingness to engage in dialogue with Niger, despite the escalating tensions. The growing diplomatic standoff between Benin and Niger has thus far failed to dampen Nigeria’s efforts to maintain stability in the region.

In addition to the diplomatic tensions, concerns over terrorism and extremist violence have only intensified in West Africa, particularly in the Sahel region, which has witnessed the rise of militant groups such as Boko Haram and Al-Qaeda affiliates. The region has seen escalating violence in recent years, with many neighboring countries grappling with insurgencies that threaten national security.

The accusations from Niger’s military leadership against Benin come at a time when the international community is closely monitoring the political situation in Niger following last year’s military coup. The West African bloc ECOWAS, of which both Benin and Niger are members, has struggled to respond effectively to the crisis, leading to questions about the effectiveness of regional diplomacy.

Benin has long positioned itself as a moderate voice in West African politics, seeking to balance relationships with both Western powers and its African neighbors. However, the recent spate of accusations and escalating diplomatic tensions with Niger could test Benin’s ability to maintain its diplomatic neutrality.

Despite the growing friction, both countries have expressed a desire to resolve the conflict through diplomatic channels, with Benin stressing the importance of dialogue to prevent further deterioration of relations. However, as tensions simmer over issues of security, oil, and trade, it remains unclear whether the diplomatic efforts will bear fruit.
