Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has reaffirmed his strong belief in Nigeria’s potential, expressing optimism that the country will overcome its challenges and achieve progress within his lifetime. Obasanjo made this statement on Tuesday during his 88th birthday celebration, which took place at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Addressing dignitaries and well-wishers who gathered to honor him, the elder statesman acknowledged the difficulties Nigeria faces but maintained that better days lie ahead.
“For me, I am an incurable optimist about Nigeria. Yes, the situation is bad, no doubt, but I believe that in my lifetime, we will have a Nigeria that we will all be proud of,” he said.
Call for National Development
Obasanjo also used the occasion to urge Nigerians to take responsibility for the country’s development. He stressed that building a better Nigeria is a collective duty and that citizens must work together to achieve positive change.
“We have an obligation to build the nation. If we do it right, we will have an enviable Nigeria in our lifetime,” he stated.
The former president extended his gratitude to those who sent goodwill messages and offered prayers for his continued health. In return, he wished longevity for his well-wishers, encouraging them to strive for meaningful contributions to the country.
“To those who have reached 80, may you attain 90 and 100, and I will be there to celebrate with you. Those who are yet to reach 80, by God’s grace, you will,” he said.

During the event, Professor Eghosa Osaghae delivered a lecture that focused on Nigeria’s past and the need for a new leadership approach. “It is for us to see where we have all gone wrong—without exception. If there’s a way out, how do we get there? And what must we do to make it happen?” he asked.
