Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, on Wednesday received the symbolic torch for the much-anticipated Niger Delta Sports Festival, which will take place in Uyo, the state capital. The event marks the beginning of a significant sports initiative that aims to unite the Niger Delta region through sports and discover new athletic talents.
The torch, which was handed over to Governor Eno by Olympic medalist Mr. Aniefiok Udobong, was received at the Government House in Uyo in the presence of the State Executive Council and other dignitaries. Governor Eno expressed his gratitude to the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for selecting Akwa Ibom as the host state for this inaugural regional sports festival.
“I deeply appreciate the opportunity given to us to host this historic event,” Governor Eno said during the torch handover ceremony. “The Niger Delta Sports Festival is a wonderful initiative that will not only promote sports in our region but also serve as a platform for discovering new talents who will represent the Niger Delta and Nigeria at larger competitions.”
The Governor emphasized the event’s potential to enhance unity within the Niger Delta region. He highlighted the significance of regional cooperation and how sports can be an avenue to foster peace and understanding among the people. “This sports festival will unite our people and showcase our talents in a way that strengthens the bond among the states of the Niger Delta,” he added.
The Governor’s words reflect a strong commitment to regional integration, echoing the festival’s broader goals of bringing together the diverse communities of the Niger Delta. This is especially crucial in a region known for its cultural diversity and economic significance.
The Chairman of the festival’s planning committee, Mr. Alabo Boma Iyaye, also spoke at the event. He described the festival as the first of its kind in the South-South region, emphasizing that it would be a historic occasion for the people of the Niger Delta. “This is the first time that such a large-scale sports event is being held in the South-South region, and we are excited about its potential to create lasting impact in terms of talent discovery and sports development,” Iyaye said.
The Niger Delta Sports Festival will feature over 4,000 athletes from the nine states that make up the region: Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Imo, Ondo, Rivers, and Abia. Athletes will compete in various sporting disciplines, including athletics, football, basketball, and volleyball, among others. The competition will culminate in the awarding of medals, and the winners will be given the opportunity to represent the region in national and international competitions.
Governor Eno also used the occasion to reaffirm Akwa Ibom’s commitment to promoting sports as a means of developing both the youth and the state as a whole. He highlighted the importance of creating platforms where young people could showcase their skills and find opportunities for growth. The Governor also reiterated that the festival aligns with his administration’s focus on youth empowerment and development.
“This festival is a testament to the commitment of Akwa Ibom State to foster the growth of sports in Nigeria,” Governor Eno said. “Through initiatives like this, we will continue to encourage our youth to pursue excellence in all they do, and we will provide them with the tools they need to succeed.”
The festival is expected to bring a significant boost to the local economy in Uyo and Akwa Ibom at large. With over 4,000 athletes and officials expected to participate, the event will generate business for local hotels, transport companies, and vendors, among others. Additionally, the event is expected to draw attention to the region’s sports infrastructure, which will be further developed as part of the festival’s legacy.
In a related development, the Governor assured that the state government would provide all necessary facilities to ensure the smooth execution of the festival. Akwa Ibom has a history of hosting major events, including sports tournaments, and is known for its vibrant sports culture.
