2027: No Victory Without the North – Baba-Ahmed

    Share

Former Special Adviser on Political Matters to President Bola Tinubu, Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has declared that the North holds the key to the 2027 presidential election, insisting that no politician can become Nigeria’s president without the region’s support.

Baba-Ahmed, a well-known political commentator and northern advocate, made this statement in a viral video interview that circulated widely on social media over the weekend. He appeared alongside Professor Usman Yusuf, a former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

During the interview, Baba-Ahmed said the North is becoming more politically conscious and would no longer give its votes to politicians who fail to understand or address the region’s unique challenges.

“We want a government that understands our problems and can solve them,” he said.

Dr Baba-Ahmed noted that many years of insecurity, poverty, and neglect have made northern voters more alert and more determined to take control of their political destiny.

He referenced the long-standing impact of the Boko Haram insurgency, banditry, and rural poverty, saying these issues have affected people across the North regardless of religion or ethnicity.

He explained that as the country moves closer to the next general election in 2027, the North will make its political direction known and that whoever ignores the region will do so at their own risk.

“The injustice and sidelining must stop,” he said. “The North is watching, and soon, our elders, our masses, and our interest groups will say ‘enough is enough.’”

The former presidential aide emphasized that Nigeria’s presidency is not possible without the support of the North, due to its voting strength and population.

“No candidate can become the president of Nigeria without the backing of the North. It is that simple,” Baba-Ahmed stressed.

He added that the region would no longer allow itself to be used by politicians who only remember the North during campaigns.

“We’ve seen this pattern too many times — empty promises, lack of respect, and complete neglect after elections. That era is coming to an end,” he said.

In a strong warning to political actors across the country, Baba-Ahmed advised against any plans to rig the 2027 elections. He said such attempts could lead to serious consequences for the nation.

“If they plan to rig the election, they should be careful. It won’t be good for Nigeria,” he said bluntly.

He urged political leaders to respect the will of the people and ensure that the 2027 elections are free, fair, and credible.

Dr Baba-Ahmed recently resigned from his role as Special Adviser to President Tinubu. According to him, he stepped down so he could return to active advocacy for northern interests, which he said have been ignored in national decision-making.

Before joining the government, Baba-Ahmed served as the spokesperson of the Arewa Elders Forum, a group known for defending northern values and interests.

He said he is now back with renewed energy to help the North organise itself politically and socially ahead of the 2027 elections.

“The time has come for us to speak with one voice. The North is not a pawn in anyone’s game,” he said.

According to Baba-Ahmed, the region’s leaders, elders, traditional rulers, and grassroots groups will soon come together to decide the path forward. He said this decision will become clear within the next six months.

“We are going to hold meetings, consultations, and conversations across the North. By the end of that process, our direction will be known to everyone,” he stated.

He urged northern politicians and interest groups to stay united and reject any moves that seek to divide the region along ethnic or religious lines.

“Divisive politics is one of the biggest threats to progress in this country. We must say no to it,” he said.

Baba-Ahmed’s comments come at a time when many Nigerians are expressing frustration over insecurity, poverty, and economic hardship. His remarks reflect wider concerns within the North that the region has not benefited enough from political power despite producing several presidents.

He called for a more inclusive approach to governance, where all regions feel represented and heard.

“The North wants peace, development, and justice. That’s what every Nigerian wants. We will support any candidate who offers real solutions — not just empty speeches,” he said.

His statements have sparked reactions across political circles, with many analysts interpreting them as early signs of realignment ahead of 2027.

Some political commentators have suggested that Baba-Ahmed’s remarks may indicate a shift away from the current administration, while others believe it could be the start of a broader northern political movement.

Political watchers are also paying close attention to other prominent northern figures, including traditional rulers and religious leaders, to see how they respond in the coming months.

Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed is a respected voice in northern politics. He has served in various capacities, including as a senior public servant and political adviser. He holds a PhD and is known for his firm views on national unity, northern development, and electoral justice.

Professor Usman Yusuf, who joined him in the interview, is also a vocal critic of the current system and has consistently called for reforms, particularly in the healthcare and security sectors.

Both men are among the growing number of northern intellectuals and political actors calling for a new direction in Nigerian politics — one that reflects the hopes and realities of the people on the ground.
