Peter Nwachukwu, the husband of late gospel singer Osinachi, has been sentenced to death by hanging for her murder. The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), sitting in Abuja, delivered the verdict today after finding Nwachukwu guilty of culpable homicide.
The court ruled that the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt that Nwachukwu caused the death of his wife on April 8, 2022. He was charged with a 23-count indictment, including culpable homicide, criminal intimidation, cruelty to children, and spousal battery. The trial began in June 2022, and 17 witnesses, including two of the couple’s children, testified against Nwachukwu.
In his defense, Nwachukwu denied the charges, calling four witnesses and submitting four exhibits. Despite his counsel’s plea for leniency, the court upheld the law, sentencing him to death by hanging on the first count. In addition to the death sentence, Nwachukwu received various prison terms for other charges and fines totaling N700,000.
The case has brought widespread attention to domestic violence and abuse, highlighting the tragic loss of Osinachi, whose death sparked public outrage. The ruling serves as a reminder of the law’s stance on such heinous crimes.
