At least 15 people have been killed in a fresh attack by suspected herdsmen in Agatu Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue State. The deadly assault occurred on the night of Saturday, May 17, 2025, along the Ogwumogbo and Okpo’okpolo axis of the area.

According to Mr. Anthony Ikwulono, the former Vice Chairman of Agatu LGA, several others were also injured during the attack, which left many residents in fear and trauma. The bodies of those killed have been recovered.

The attack, which continued into Sunday morning, has once again left the community in shock. Another source, who wished to remain anonymous, revealed that the violence affected the Ogbayi and Ogwumogbo communities the most. The source named one Ali from Ogwumogbo and five others, whose identities are yet to be confirmed, as victims.

“This is a sad situation. Our farming communities are now deserted, with residents fleeing for their lives,” the source said, calling for urgent intervention from the state government and security forces.

This attack follows a similar one that occurred barely two weeks ago in Otobi-Akpa, Otukpo LGA, where eight people, including a district head of Agatu, were killed.
