The suspended Enogie (Duke) of Utoka community in Ovia Northeast Local Government Area of Edo State, Airomwanbo Ogieayevbona, has publicly apologised to the Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II.

Ogieayevbona, who had earlier been suspended for alleged misconduct and disregard for traditional authority, tendered an unreserved apology to the revered monarch, seeking forgiveness and reconciliation.

In a statement released by the embattled Duke, he acknowledged his mistakes and expressed deep regret for his actions, which he admitted had brought dishonour to the royal institution.

“I agree to abide by whatever it pleases Your Royal Majesty to request me to do, to be able to reconcile with you as your loyal subject and son,” he said.

The Enogie further stated that he never intended to abandon his ancestral roots or turn his back on the Benin tradition. “I admit the toll my suspension has taken on me, and I am fully repentant. I pledge to retrace my steps and to be of good conduct,” he added.

The Benin monarchy, one of Nigeria’s oldest and most respected traditional institutions, places high value on loyalty, discipline, and respect for royal authority. Any breach of these expectations by titleholders such as Enogies is often met with swift disciplinary action.

Oba Ewuare II, known for his commitment to preserving Benin cultural heritage and restoring order to the traditional leadership system, has in recent years taken firm steps to discipline erring chiefs and restore public trust in the kingdom’s governance.

Ogieayevbona’s apology may be the first step toward reconciliation, though it remains to be seen what decision the palace will take regarding his suspension.

The case has drawn attention in Edo State, especially among traditional circles, where the Oba’s actions are seen as a move to uphold discipline and respect for ancient customs.

Residents and traditional observers will now await the Oba’s response to the Duke’s plea, hoping for peace and unity to return to the Utoka community.
