PDP Notifies INEC of Crucial NEC Meeting June 30

    Share

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially notified the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that it will hold its 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on June 30, 2025.

In a letter dated May 30 and signed by Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, the party stated that the meeting would take place at its national headquarters in Abuja. The letter was submitted in line with INEC’s 21-day notice requirement.

According to party insiders, the NEC meeting will focus on several unresolved matters, including the controversy surrounding the position of National Secretary, the ratification of zonal congresses, and reports from various committees.

The PDP has faced internal divisions since before the 2023 general elections. Ongoing disputes in Rivers State, disagreements over congresses in the South-South and South-East, and the unresolved North-Central congress issue have deepened tensions.

The party has postponed its NEC meeting six times, which has delayed major decisions about its future direction. Some governors, including Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta and Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom, have since joined the ruling APC.

One key issue expected to be addressed is the confirmation of Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the PDP’s National Secretary. A fact-finding committee led by Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas reported that INEC officially recognises Anyanwu. However, the matter was left unresolved at the 99th NEC meeting held on May 27.

Damagum’s letter to INEC reads: “We write to formally inform and invite INEC that the leadership of our great party, PDP, has scheduled our 100th NEC meeting to hold on Monday, June 30, 2025, at the National Secretariat of our party, Wadata Plaza, Wuse Zone 5, Abuja.”

Efforts to get comments from Damagum and the PDP Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, were unsuccessful.

Party sources say the June 30 meeting will also focus on setting up key committees and could mark a turning point in efforts to resolve the PDP’s ongoing leadership and structural challenges.
