Kebbi Mulls Death Penalty for Bandits’ Informants

    Share

The Kebbi State Government is proposing a tough new law that would impose the death penalty or life imprisonment on anyone found guilty of acting as an informant to bandits.

Governor Nasiru Idris made this announcement on Tuesday during a visit to Tadurga village in Zuru and Kyebu in Danko/Wasagu Local Government Areas. The visits followed recent bandit attacks that left at least 30 people dead and hundreds of cattle stolen.

Governor Idris described informants as enemies of peace and vowed that his administration would not tolerate those who aid criminals. “We are going to propose a law for death sentence or life imprisonment for anyone caught helping bandits,” he declared.

To strengthen the fight against insecurity, Governor Idris said the government will set up a military operational base in the Zuru Emirate. He added that Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) and other security equipment have already arrived from Abuja.

In the past year, the state government has taken several security measures, including:

The governor also warned against spreading fake news and politicizing security issues, saying such actions could derail efforts to restore peace.

During the visit, traditional rulers including the Emir of Zuru, Major General Sani Sami (rtd), and the Chiefs of Danko and Dabai praised the governor’s swift response and called for more border surveillance to block criminal movement from nearby states.

Governor Idris ended his visit by offering prayers for the victims and pledging continued action to secure the lives and property of all residents.
