A deadly kidnapping incident in Okuta, Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara State, has left three people dead, including a respected businessman, a local vigilante, and one of the suspected kidnappers.
The attack occurred around 10:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 22, when armed men, believed to be of Fulani origin, invaded the home of Alhaji Dauda Ismaila, a well-known businessman and farmer. The gunmen reportedly fired several shots into the air to scare residents before abducting Alhaji Dauda and fleeing into the nearby forest.
Local vigilantes immediately mobilised and pursued the kidnappers. A violent exchange of gunfire took place deep in the bush, resulting in the death of one kidnapper. Unfortunately, Alhaji Dauda was also killed during the shootout. A vigilante involved in the rescue effort lost his life as well.
Security forces, including a joint task force, are still combing the forest in search of the fleeing kidnappers and have promised to bring them to justice.
Sunday’s attack is the latest in a troubling rise in kidnappings in Baruten LGA. On May 31, a resident of nearby Shiya was kidnapped and released only after a ransom was paid. In February, another businessman, Alhaji Fatai Olowogbo, was killed during a failed abduction attempt.
Residents say the attacks have become regular, creating fear and uncertainty in the area. Community leaders are now calling on the state and federal governments to urgently boost security in the region to protect lives and property.
