The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced August 16, 2025, as the date for bye-elections to fill vacant seats in the National and State Assemblies across 16 constituencies in Nigeria.
According to INEC, political party primaries will be held from July 17 to 21, while the deadline for submission of nomination forms is between July 22 and 26. Campaigns will run from August 2 to 14.
The bye-elections were necessitated by the death or resignation of lawmakers in several constituencies.
Some major constituencies affected include:
Edo Central Senatorial District, vacated by Monday Okpebholo after becoming Governor of Edo State
Anambra South Senatorial District, following the death of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah in July 2024
Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency (Kaduna), after the death of Rep. Ekene Abubakar Adams
Ovia South-West/Ovia North-East Federal Constituency (Edo), vacated by Dennis Idahosa, now Deputy Governor of Edo
Ibadan North Federal Constituency (Oyo), following the death of Rep. Olaide Akinremi

– Zaria Kewaye (Kaduna)
– Munya (Niger)
– Ganye (Adamawa)
INEC said the elections aim to restore full legislative representation and urged political parties, candidates, and the public to comply with all rules and timelines.
