Ex-Lawmaker Calls for Abattoir in Obudu to Stop Farmer-Herder Clashes

A former member of the House of Representatives, Dr. Emmanuel Utande, has called on the government to establish a modern abattoir in Obudu, Cross River State, as a way to end recurring clashes between farmers and herders in the region.

Speaking to journalists, the Second Republic lawmaker said that a centralized slaughterhouse in Obudu would help regulate cattle movement, reduce tensions over farmland, and serve as a major step toward peaceful coexistence.

Dr. Utande, who represented Obudu Federal Constituency, pointed out that the frequent disputes between herders and farmers often lead to violence and loss of lives across Cross River, Benue, and other neighbouring states. He believes a well-managed abattoir could help control the routes and activities of herders.

He also mentioned that with the cargo airport already in place in Obudu, cattle can be transported with ease, and products from the abattoir could be distributed both nationally and internationally.

“This abattoir will serve as a central point for all cattle. It will reduce the chances of clashes. It will also create jobs, generate profit, and drive development in the area,” he said.

Drawing from his international experience, Dr. Utande recalled leading a delegation to Botswana and the Bahamas in 1980 while serving in the National Assembly. He noted that Botswana, with one of the largest livestock populations in the world, runs the second-largest abattoir globally. He said Nigeria can adopt similar models to improve food production and reduce conflict.

He also encouraged local farmers to begin growing soya beans, which are essential for fattening cattle, and highlighted the potential of producing cheese and milk for global markets.

Dr. Utande called on the Federal Government and Cross River State Government to partner with reputable international firms to bring the project to life, stating that the abattoir is not only possible but economically viable.
