Renowned Benue-born gospel singer, Israel Terhemba Ikyereve, popularly known as New Jerusalem, has died at the age of 53, sparking widespread mourning across the state and beyond.
The late gospel artist was celebrated for using Tiv traditional Swange music to preach the gospel, gaining a devoted following across Nigeria and even abroad. His music ministry left a lasting spiritual and cultural impact on many, especially in the Christian community.
Former Governor of Benue State, Chief Samuel Ortom, led a condolence visit to the singer’s residence in Makurdi, where he praised New Jerusalem as a committed Christian whose songs carried deep spiritual messages.
“His songs touched my heart as a lover of Christ,” Ortom said. “That attraction led me to seek a personal relationship with him, which began a lasting bond with his family.”
Ortom recalled hearing Ikyereve’s songs featured in an international programme in Australia, where a Tiv man played his music while teaching, calling it proof of the singer’s global influence.
The former governor offered prayers for the bereaved family and promised continued support to them and the New Jerusalem Gospel Music Troupe, assuring them they would not be abandoned after the burial.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Hon. Iorshagher Ikyereve, elder brother of the deceased, thanked Ortom for his consistent support throughout the singer’s illness and after his passing. He also revealed that one of Israel’s sons was named “Ortom” in appreciation of the former governor’s kindness.
Prayers during the visit were led by Rev. Pastor Tor Ujah and Dr. Joseph Antyo, both members of the Brethren Prayer Group, to which Ortom belongs.
The late gospel artist is survived by his wife and fellow gospel singer, Deborah Msendoo Ikyereve, four children, and other family members.
His burial has been scheduled for Saturday, July 5, 2025, at his hometown, Sati Agirigi, Mbamo, Shitile, in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State.
