Former President Muhammadu Buhari is currently receiving medical treatment in London, several reliable sources have confirmed.

The 82-year-old ex-leader, who left office on May 29, 2023, has been out of the country since April 2025. Initially, Buhari travelled to the United Kingdom for a routine medical check-up, but reports say his health took a turn for the worse shortly after.

His former spokesperson, Garba Shehu, confirmed the development.

“It is true that the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, is unwell. He has been receiving treatment in the UK,” Shehu said in a statement. “He became ill there, but I am happy to announce that he is doing well in his recovery. We pray for his healthy recovery.”

The exact illness and the hospital where Buhari is being treated have not been made public.

There are conflicting reports on when he actually became ill. Some sources say he was already unwell before leaving Nigeria, while others claim he only got sick after arriving in London.

During his time in office (2015–2023), Buhari was frequently criticised for seeking medical care abroad instead of improving the health sector at home. He made several long trips to the UK for medical reasons, including a 104-day stay in 2017, which sparked national concern and debate.

At one point during his presidency, an apartment was reportedly secured near a London hospital to give him private access to care.

After leaving office, Buhari kept a low profile in his hometown, Daura, in Katsina State. However, his prolonged absence from the country has now raised fresh concerns about his health and future plans.

As of the time of this report, the Federal Government has not released an official statement on Buhari’s condition.
