The Kano State Hisbah Board has annulled the marriage of a young couple, Aliyu Mukhtar and Fatima, for going ahead with their wedding without the consent of their parents.
The couple, both residents of Yakasai area in Kano, reportedly got married in secret after facing strong opposition from their families. Aliyu, 22, said his father refused to approve the marriage, calling him too young to marry. Fatima, still a secondary school student, also faced rejection from her family, who believed she was not ready for marriage.
Despite the objections, the young lovers went ahead with the ceremony. With help from friends who stood in as guardians, the Nikkah was quietly conducted without informing their families.
The secret wedding, however, sparked outrage among their relatives, who quickly reported the matter to the Hisbah Board — a religious enforcement agency responsible for upholding Islamic principles in Kano State.
After investigating, the Hisbah Board confirmed that the marriage did not follow proper procedures under Islamic and cultural traditions, mainly due to the lack of parental consent. Based on this, the Board dissolved the union.
In Islam, parental consent is an important part of marriage, especially in conservative societies like Kano, where cultural and religious norms are strictly observed.
As of the time this report was filed, neither Aliyu nor Fatima had issued any statement regarding the annulment.
